Temiskaming Thunder Girls Teams Head Into Big Tournament Weekend

It’s a big weekend on the hardwood for the Temiskaming Thunder girls rep program as multiple teams hit the road for major tournament action across Ontario.
The Thunder U16 girls are headed to Niagara to compete in the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships, while the U19 girls are travelling to Kingston for tournament play against teams from across the province.

The weekend marks another important step for the growing basketball program, which continues to give Northern Ontario athletes opportunities to compete at a high level while representing communities across the Temiskaming region.
The Thunder program has continued to build momentum in recent years, with strong participation, competitive teams, and increased visibility for girls basketball in the North.
Now, with tournament weekend here, the Thunder girls are ready to take the court and represent the region once again.
If you are a coach of a team that would like to have their team scores and highlight shared with the community please reach out to [email protected] and lets connect.

The Deep Water Project Is More Than a Concert

There are stories scattered all across the Temiskaming region.
Stories buried in old mines, museums, shorelines, fires, legends, logging camps and communities that learned how to rebuild themselves over and over again.
Most people just never stop long enough to hear them.
That idea became one of the foundations behind the Deep Water Project, an ambitious live musical production coming to the Classic Theatre in Cobalt.
What started as a single song slowly expanded into a full performance exploring the identity, resilience, and forgotten history of the Temiskaming region through original music and storytelling.
And according to the musicians involved, this is unlike anything they’ve worked on before.
Different songs take on completely different personalities and genres depending on the story being told.
“There’s just so much rich history here,” Roy Dittmann, who created the concept of the project, said. “The more I researched, the more fascinated I became by how many stories have never really been told.”
But the project is about more than simply looking backward.
Roy hopes the show becomes “a gateway to more information,” inspiring people to explore local museums, landmarks, Indigenous stories, and the deeper history many people pass by every day without realizing it.
And somewhere along the way, the musicians themselves started seeing the region differently too.
We sat down with Roy Dittmann, and separately with Nathaniel and Julie Preston, to talk about hidden Northern Ontario history, emotional rehearsals, local resilience, storytelling through music, and why this project may leave audiences walking out of the theatre with a completely new appreciation for where they live.

Game Coming Soon!
Be On The Look Out!
You’re going to start seeing this guy around.
We call him the Tri Town Guide.

We’re going to be launching a simple game on Facebook called Find the Guide. On certain days we’ll post a photo somewhere around the Tri Town. The Guide will be in that photo. Your job will be to figure out where it is.

You’ll drop your guess in the comment, and every correct answer will count as an entry. We’ll draw a winner each week and feature them in the newsletter. Local businesses will be part of it too, so prizes will come from right here in the community.
It’s meant to be simple. Something quick, something fun, something that makes you look at the tri town area a little differently.
We’re not launching it just yet. We want to build this up properly first. But it’s coming soon.
So for now, just keep an eye out.
Because once the Guide starts showing up, you’ll know it’s time to play.
