The first weeks back at school can be busy, so The Snack Shack is offering a little thank-you to the people helping students settle back in.

Think you know Temiskaming Shores? The Temiskaming Art Gallery (TAG) is putting local knowledge to the test Saturday afternoon.

A Temiskaming Shores-themed trivia event takes place Saturday, September 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Open Studio Libre inside the Shelley Herbert-Shea Memorial Arena in Haileybury.

Participants can compete individually or as a group, with questions focused on the local area and a grand prize featuring items sourced from local businesses up for grabs.

Admission is $10, with tickets available in advance or at the door.

Those old family photos tucked away in albums could become part of a new exhibition telling the story of Cobalt's waterways and their surprising place in Canadian environmental history.

The Cobalt Mining Museum is developing Cobalt Waterways and the Cobalt Water Act of 1917, a new bilingual exhibition opening in spring 2027.

Curated by Felicity Buckell, the exhibition will explore how Cobalt's silver boom affected the region's waterways and helped prompt the Cobalt Water Act of 1917, described by the museum as one of Canada's earliest environmental protection laws.

But the story won't be told through historical records alone.

The museum wants local residents and families to help document what these waters have meant to the community over the generations. It is particularly interested in historic and family photographs of Cobalt Lake, Kerr Lake, Crosswise Lake and Sasaginaga, as it works to compile a natural history of the lakes.

Photos could show everything from swimming and fishing to family outings, changing shorelines or simply what the lakes looked like decades ago.

This Sunday, September 13 from 1 to 4 p.m., people can bring their photographs to the Cobalt Mining Museum to have them scanned for possible use in the exhibition. Families can contribute their history without giving up their original photographs.

The exhibition is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage and being developed in partnership with Agnico Eagle Mines Limited and Le Centre culturel ARTEM.

After opening at the Cobalt Mining Museum next spring, it will travel to the Timmins Museum National Exhibition Centre and Musée Fossilarium in Notre-Dame-du-Nord.

Photos can also be shared through the museum's Cobalt Waterways project page, and anyone with stories or other memories connected to Cobalt's waterways is encouraged to get involved.

It's a chance to dig through the family photo albums and help tell a story that connects Cobalt's mining past, its lakes and more than a century of water protection.

The Ontario Clean Water Agency will conduct routine flushing of Temagami’s municipal water system, with revised dates of September 21 to 25 for Temagami South and September 28 to October 2 for Temagami North.

Residents may experience temporary water discolouration, rust or sediment, and reduced water pressure during the work. Once flushing is complete, run a cold-water tap with the aerator removed until the water runs clear.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
