Maude's Chance Comes Home

Pic Credit: Christine Langlois
She was a northerner long before she was a novelist.
Christine Langlois was born and raised in Kirkland Lake, and her family's connections to the Cobalt silver rush go back generations. When she sat down to write her first historical novel, she wrote it about home.
Maude's Chance is set in Cobalt in the summer of 1909. A young mother arrives in the chaotic mining town and finds herself caught up in a typhoid epidemic. It is based on true events, a story of courage, community and the strength of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances.
Bonnie Baker Cowan, former editor-in-chief of Canadian Living, says the book "captivates from the beginning to its edge-of-the-seat end."
Now Langlois is taking Maude on the road. She stops at the Cobalt Public Library on Wednesday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. for an author reading and signing, then moves on to Chat Noir Books in New Liskeard from 2 to 3 p.m. that afternoon for a meet-and-greet. Kirkland Lake gets its own stop on Saturday, October 24, with an author presentation and signing at the Museum of Northern History from 1 to 3 p.m. The tour also rolls on to Timmins and North Bay.
The novel is now available for pre-order.
Keep an eye out along the way. It is not every day a story like this comes home.

New Liskeard Library Lends Games

Pic Credit: TemiskamingShores.ca
Sharren Reil is almost seventy, and she figured board games had their moment and moved on.
Then she watched her kids, both in their mid-twenties, and the whole country apparently. The board game market in Canada is worth somewhere between 406 and 621 million US dollars, growing about ten percent a year.
So the library got in on it. The Temiskaming Shores Public Library keeps a collection of around fifty board games you can take home free with your library card. The rack sits upstairs by the Reference desk.
The list runs from old reliable like Clue, Scrabble, Sorry and Yahtzee to newer favorites like Catan, Exploding Kittens and Pictionary. There is even a Tri-Towns Monopoly. Some games will be checked out when you visit, so the shelf changes week to week.
Bring your card and browse the rack upstairs. Your next game night might already be paid for.

🎨 Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest
The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is holding an Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest for children ages 3 to 12 from September 19 to October 17.
Children can compete in three age categories: 3–5, 6–8 and 9–12, with a prize for the first-place winner in each group. Colouring pages are available at the library's Reference Desk.
🍲 Homemade Meals Fundraiser
Timiskaming Home Support is selling homemade meals as a fundraiser. Lasagna, shepherd's pie and meatballs are on the menu, with 9x13 pans at $25 and 8x8 pans at $15.
Order by calling 1-877-318-9678 ext. 2268. Orders are due October 15 and will be ready October 22. Payment details are on the order form, and they will call you when your order is ready.
🍬 Halloween Treat Drive in Latchford
Want to hand out treats this Halloween but cannot be at the door? The Latchford Fire Department is accepting candy and treat donations. Drop them off at the fire department on October 24 between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
Your donations help make Halloween sweet and safe for local kids.
