You Have More To Trade Than You Think

When you hear the word barter, you might picture two people swapping things of roughly equal value.

But what if you don't have anything valuable to trade?

You probably do.

That's part of the idea behind Start The Barter, the new local marketplace created in Temiskaming Shores.

A trade doesn't have to involve an expensive tool, appliance or piece of furniture. It could be leftover building materials, children's sports equipment, plants, books or something sitting in your garage that you haven't used in years.

It doesn't even have to be a thing.

You can offer a skill or service.

Maybe you're good at photography. You can repair small engines. You make preserves. You have a trailer and can haul something. You cut grass or make handmade items.

Something that doesn't seem particularly valuable to you might be exactly what somebody else needs.

Kyle Chester designed Start The Barter so people can create an account and post listings for free.

Take a photo, describe what you're offering and post it. The platform can even automatically choose a category for your listing.

For people who want a little more, there's an optional Premium membership for $4.99 a month.

Premium moves your listings toward the top so they're more likely to be seen. It also gives you access to additional analytics about your listings and removes advertising banners while you browse.

But you don't need Premium to participate.

Creating an account, browsing and posting something to trade can all be done for free.

And right now, that's what Start The Barter needs most.

More people. More listings. More possibilities.

Because the old drill sitting on your workbench may not mean much to you anymore.

To somebody else, it might be worth trading for.

What do you have?

This is the second in a Tri Town Today series following Start The Barter, a new local marketplace built right here in Temiskaming Shores.

Charge Into Fire Safety

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, and this year the focus is on something found in almost every home: lithium-ion batteries.

The Temiskaming Shores Fire Department is reminding residents that phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes and other rechargeable devices can pose a fire risk if batteries are damaged or charged improperly.

This year's theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” encourages people to make safer choices whenever they plug in.

Throughout the week, the fire department will be sharing tips to help residents safely charge, use and handle lithium-ion batteries.

DTSSAB Wants to Hear From Landlords

Do you own or manage a rental property in the District of Timiskaming?

The District of Timiskaming Social Services Administration Board (DTSSAB) is asking local landlords to take part in its new Timiskaming Rental Housing Snapshot.

The voluntary survey is designed to give DTSSAB a better picture of the rental housing that exists across the district, including units that may never appear in public rental listings.

Landlords can choose how much information they provide and can participate anonymously. DTSSAB says the initiative is not connected to inspections, enforcement, taxation, licensing or property standards.

The information will be used to support housing planning, help people looking for housing and potentially strengthen connections between landlords and community partners.

Landlords with one rental unit or many, whether currently occupied or available, are encouraged to participate.

💧 Englehart Boil Water Advisory Lifted

The boil water advisory for residents served by the Town of Englehart Drinking Water System has been lifted as of Saturday, October 3. Water sample results confirm the water is safe to drink.

Residents should run cold water faucets for 10 minutes before using the water. Evanturel residents connected to the system should check with the Township of Evanturel for confirmation that the advisory has been lifted in their area.

🦃 Thanksgiving Raffle at Northdale

Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Buy them at Northdale Manor between 2 and 4 PM, or send an e-transfer to [email protected] with your name and contact information. The draw is October 9, with a 50/50, a Cozy Wolf blanket and $50 cash on the prize table.

Timiskaming Home Support is selling homemade meals as a fundraiser. Lasagna, shepherd's pie and meatballs are on the menu, with 9x13 pans at $25 and 8x8 pans at $15.

Order by calling 1-877-318-9678 ext. 2268. Orders are due October 15 and will be ready October 22. Payment details are on the order form, and they will call you when your order is ready.

🍬 Halloween Treat Drive in Latchford

Your donations help make Halloween sweet and safe for local kids.
