I was only supposed to pick up a couple of tickets.

Instead, I spent the next half hour talking with Chris Gallagher.

I'm glad I did.

Chris is the founder of Northern Hospice Care, the organization behind this weekend's Garden Tour. What I thought would be a quick stop turned into a conversation about an idea that has quietly been growing in our community for more than two years.

Like many worthwhile ideas, this one didn't start with a business plan.

It started with a question.

Why don't we have a residential hospice here?

Chris didn't set out to build one.

The first meeting she organized in March 2024 was simply about bringing people together. Representatives from healthcare organizations met at Northdale Manor to talk about what already existed and whether there were gaps in end-of-life care.

What happened next surprised even her.

The more they learned...

The more they realized this region could support a residential hospice.

So they kept going.

Today, that conversation has grown into Northern Hospice Care, an incorporated non-profit with a committee of volunteers working toward charitable status while researching what a hospice could look like for our region.

Not a massive healthcare facility.

A home.

A place where someone could spend their final days surrounded by family in a setting that feels warm instead of clinical.

What struck me during our conversation wasn't how ambitious the vision is.

It was how patient they've been.

Rather than deciding what the community needs, they've been asking.

They've been travelling throughout the region, speaking to service clubs, municipal councils and community groups. They've been collecting surveys and listening to stories.

And that's something Chris said she never expected.

Almost every presentation leads to someone sharing their own experience.

A parent.

A spouse.

A friend.

Every story reminds the committee why they started.

When I was leaving what struck me wasn't just the conversation.

It was the question, ‘Why don't we have this here?’

Sometimes that's all it takes.

One question.

One conversation.

And a handful of people willing to keep showing up until the answer changes.

As I drove away, I couldn't help but smile.

Think about how this all came together.

You see, Chris had picked up the Garden Tour tickets from the business selling them just 30 minutes before I arrived.

The owner called and left a message to say someone was looking for two tickets.

At the same time, I had sent Northern Hospice Care a message on Facebook asking if there were any left.

A little while later, Chris called and asked if I'd like to pick them up at her house.

One small change of plans.

One unexpected conversation.

And a story I probably never would have heard otherwise.

Northern Ontario's wildlife comes to life through intricate hand-carved prints now on display in Temagami.

The Temagami & District Chamber of Commerce is showcasing the work of Agnieszka Koscisz, a Polish-born artist whose linocut prints are inspired by the region's forests, wildlife, folklore and the quiet beauty of nature.

Now based in Temagami, Koscisz studied graphic design before completing a diploma in linocut printmaking in Krakow, Poland. Her detailed relief prints blend realism with subtle touches of magic, often weaving moons, stars and storytelling into images of animals native to Northern Ontario.

Visitors can view the collection on both the main floor and upstairs gallery at the Chamber office. Original prints, along with postcard-sized versions, are available for purchase.

Whether you're an art enthusiast, looking for a unique gift or simply curious to discover the work of a local artist, the exhibition offers a chance to experience Northern Ontario through a different lens.

Road closures will be in effect in downtown New Liskeard from Friday, July 24, to Saturday, July 25 to accommodate the New Liskeard BIA Block Party.

Sections of Whitewood Avenue, Armstrong Street and Wellington Street will be closed from 7 a.m. Friday until approximately 5 p.m. Saturday. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time while the event is underway.

The City thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as the community comes together to celebrate the annual Block Party.

A precautionary boil water advisory will be in effect for Englehart beginning Monday, July 20, while work is completed at the Town's Water Treatment Plant.

Residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth or making ice. The advisory will remain in effect until the Town of Englehart and Northeastern Public Health announce it has been lifted.

Registration is now open for the 2026 Baby Contest, taking place Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 AM on the Entertainment Stage inside the Horne Granite Curling Club.

The contest is open to babies from newborn to 12 months old, born between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026. Registration is required by August 31, with prizes awarded at the end of the contest.
