What Would You Trade?

There is probably something in your house right now that you don't need.

Maybe it's a tool collecting dust in the garage. A piece of furniture you've been meaning to get rid of. Sporting equipment the kids have outgrown.

Someone else might need it.

And they might have something you need.

That's the simple idea behind Start The Barter, a new online marketplace created right here in the Temiskaming area.

Founder Kyle Chester says the idea came partly from watching the cost of everyday life continue to climb.

"We can all see how expensive everything is getting," he said. "The price of fuel, cost of goods and services, cost of living."

Instead of always reaching for cash, Kyle wondered if people could get more value from things they already have.

Start The Barter lets people create a free account, list something they no longer need and look for something they'd rather have in exchange.

And Kyle isn't thinking only about expensive items.

It could be something left over from a project, an old appliance, clothing or even something broken that another person knows how to fix. And don’t forget about services.

For the idea to work, though, people need to participate.

"Can you imagine if everyone posted just one item?" Chester said. "This entire platform would blow up."

That's the experiment now beginning here in Temiskaming Shores.

The marketplace is built. People are starting to discover it. What it becomes depends largely on what local people put into it.

So before you throw something away, donate it or leave it sitting in the basement for another year, ask yourself one question:

What would you trade?

Visit Start The Barter to see what's already available or post something of your own.

This is the first in a Tri Town Today series exploring Start The Barter, how it works and how a locally built barter marketplace can catch on in Temiskaming.

Thunder Tryouts Are Set

Basketball families, mark the calendar.

The Temiskaming Thunder just announced tryout dates for the 2026–27 boys season — and the first one is a week away.

U15 boys (born 2012–2014) hit the court 6:00–7:15 PM; U17 boys (born 2010–2011) follow at 7:30–8:45 PM. Three dates on the schedule — Tuesday Oct. 6 and Tuesday Oct. 13 at TDSS, Monday Oct. 19 at EHS — and athletes need to attend at least two of the three to be considered.

The Thunder are an OBA and Canada Basketball verified competitive program, practicing out of Englehart and New Liskeard and competing across Ontario and Quebec all season. One must-do before lacing up: complete the Rep Interest Form ahead of tryouts.

If you are a coach of a team that would like to have their team scores and highlight shared with the community please reach out to [email protected] and lets connect.

Cobalt's Got A New Postcard View

The Cobalt Historical Society dropped a first look at the new lookout on Nip Hill this morning, and the video does all the talking — a sweeping golden-hour panorama over town, the water tower standing proud, fall colours rolling across the hills, and the old mining rock right at your feet.

"Mission accomplished!" the Society wrote, thanking Agnico Eagle Mines Limited for making it happen. (A commenter also tipped their hat to Demora Construction Services.) Locals are already buzzing underneath — "Amazing view!", "Gorgeous!" — and one very fair question: "Can we see the structure??"

If you haven't been up Nip Hill lately, this might be your reason.

Cobalt Market Seeks Vendors

Vendors, this one's for you. The 2nd annual Fall Community Market Day still has tables to fill — and there's room for just about everything, from collectibles and crafts to farmers market goods.

The October 3rd event at the Hwy 11 Vendor Market in Cobalt pairs a traditional outdoor vendor market with the year-end fur n' feather animal display and buy/sell/trade. Fur & feather vendors can bring animals weighing up to 150 pounds. For visitors, it's a full family day: browse the tables, check out the animals, grab water, pop, chips and snacks — the store will be open regular hours with indoor vendor booths and washrooms.

The vendor fee is $10, or bring an unopened bag of pet food instead. To claim a spot, email [email protected]. Visitor entry is free.

Saturday, Oct. 3 | 9 a.m.–3 p.m. | Hwy 11 Vendor Market, Cobalt

😷 COVID-19 Outbreak at Northdale Manor

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Northdale Manor, and visitors are being asked to take precautions to help protect residents and staff.

Visitors should wear a mask and sanitize their hands, and anyone feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms should not visit. Northdale Manor is also asking people to limit or postpone non-essential visits while the outbreak continues.

🚱 Boil Water Advisory in Effect

A boil water advisory is in effect immediately for the entire Town of Englehart following a continuous low-pressure incident. The advisory also includes connections to the Englehart Drinking Water System in Evanturel, Charlton and Dack and Chamberlain.

Residents should boil tap water at a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth or making ice. Residents are also asked to conserve water where possible until further notice.

💰 Community Grant Deadline Approaching

The Temiskaming Foundation is accepting applications for its fall community grants until September 30.

Funding is available through the Community Fund, For Kids Sake Fund, Englehart & Area Fund and Historic Cobalt Legacy Fund. Organizations interested in applying can review eligibility requirements and application details on the Temiskaming Foundation website.

🎨 Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is holding an Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest for children ages 3 to 12 from September 19 to October 17.

Children can compete in three age categories: 3–5, 6–8 and 9–12, with a prize for the first-place winner in each group. Colouring pages are available at the library's Reference Desk.

💧 Temagami Water System Flushing

The Ontario Clean Water Agency will conduct routine flushing of Temagami North’s municipal water system from September 28 to October 2.

Residents may experience temporary water discolouration, rust or sediment, and reduced water pressure during the work. Once flushing is complete, run a cold-water tap with the aerator removed until the water runs clear.
