Kayla Marwick has already made her mark at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat.

The Temiskaming Northern Loons swimmer had an outstanding day in the pool Wednesday, coming away with three gold medals and one silver after a demanding schedule that included both preliminary and final events.

Kayla won gold in the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and Team Ontario relay, while adding a silver medal in the 200-metre butterfly.

The four-medal performance comes after months of training with the Temiskaming Northern Loons and gives local supporters plenty to celebrate as Kayla's week at the national games continues.

And she isn't finished yet.

Back in the Pool Friday

Kayla returns to competition Friday, August 14, when she is scheduled to swim in the 50-metre butterfly.

Her preliminary race is Heat 3 at 11:11 a.m. The time of the final is not yet known.

Local supporters can follow the action from home, with swimming events being livestreamed throughout the Games.

After three golds and a silver on Wednesday, there will be plenty of people back home cheering Kayla on when she dives into the pool again Friday.

The New Liskeard RAM Rodeo rolls into town this weekend, bringing two days of rodeo action, family activities and live entertainment to the New Liskeard Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16.

Saturday gets underway with gates opening at 11 a.m., followed by the Cowboy Olympics at noon, the Sawdust Scramble at 1 p.m. and the Kids Rodeo with the Canadian Cowgirls at 2 p.m.

The main attraction begins at 4 p.m., when the RAM Rodeo takes over the ring. The full rodeo performance includes events such as pole bending, saddle bronc, barrel racing, trick riding, rescue race and bull riding.

The entertainment continues Saturday evening at the Curling Club with the Allaire Boys at 7 p.m., followed by Radio Daze at 9 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the gate, with taxes included:

Youth Day Pass: $15
Dance Tickets: $20 at the door
Free Ride Home Saturday Night

For those heading to the dance, there's also a safe way to get home.

Free taxi rides will be available Saturday from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m., covering the area from Earlton to Latchford. Rides will be provided by DK's Taxi and will be available outside the main doors of the Curling Club on a first-come, first-served basis.

Back At It Sunday

Sunday begins with gates opening at 10 a.m. The Sawdust Scramble and live music from Jayden Martin both begin at 11 a.m., followed by another Kids Rodeo with the Canadian Cowgirls at noon.

The weekend wraps up with the second full RAM Rodeo performance at 2 p.m. Sunday. The RAM Rodeo Tour also confirms New Liskeard as an official stop on its 2026 schedule, with performances at 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Foire Gourmande returns to Ville-Marie from August 14 to 16, celebrating local food and producers from Témiscamingue, Abitibi, Northeastern Ontario and across Quebec.

The 24th edition features tastings, local food and artisan vendors, chef demonstrations, family activities and free live entertainment. Admission to the festival and shows is free.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.

The evening is a chance to celebrate the volunteers, teamwork and community effort that helped make the Legion's Centennial celebrations possible. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by commenting on the original Facebook post.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 227 is looking for vendors for its Community Garage Sale on August 15 and 16, with table rentals available for $20.

Vendors must bring their own table, and all table rental proceeds support the Legion. To reserve a space, contact June at 705-498-3879.

The Armstrong Township Public Library is hosting Magnet Fishing Week from August 10 to 15, inviting visitors to try their luck at catching magnetic fish for a chance to win prizes.

The free activity is open throughout the week at the library and is part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations.
