More than a century after Ernie Martin helped uncover the gold that would change Kirkland Lake, his great-nephew is returning to the community to tell his story.

Author and retired journalist Brian “Chip” Martin will be at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake on Thursday, August 20, presenting the story behind his book Ernie’s Gold: A Prospector’s Tale.

It's a story with deep roots in Kirkland Lake.

Ernie Martin came to Canada from Staffordshire, England, in the early 1900s and eventually made his way north in search of gold. There he became prospecting partners with Harry Oakes. In 1912, while Oakes was away trying to raise money to keep their prospecting operation going, Martin discovered gold.

That discovery ultimately led to the development of Lake Shore Mine. The mine would become one of Canada's great gold producers, producing approximately 8.5 million ounces between 1918 and 1965.

But Ernie's Gold isn't simply the story of discovering a mine.

Martin describes his great-uncle's life as a remarkable rise from modest beginnings to enormous wealth and, eventually, the loss of almost all of it. Ernie's story includes prospectors, fortune seekers and some colourful characters from Kirkland Lake's early mining days. It also intersects with the life of Sir Harry Oakes and the still-unsolved 1943 murder of Oakes in the Bahamas.

For Brian Martin, the story is also personal. Ernie was the older brother of his grandfather, Sidney, and Martin's research grew from family photographs, documents and stories into a much larger investigation of a man whose role in Kirkland Lake's history was not always as well known as that of his famous prospecting partner.

Now Martin is bringing that story back to where so much of it happened.

“I'm pleased to be returning to Kirkland Lake and sharing the story of my great uncle and his life,” Martin wrote while announcing the upcoming presentation.
