Disqualified Pumpkin Feeds Polar Bears

Photo: David Slocombe

A 1,711-pound pumpkin grown near Englehart missed out on a prize, but it has found a new purpose at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat.

Jeff Warner of Aidie Creek Gardens donated the giant pumpkin after it was disqualified from Port Elgin Pumpkinfest. A soft spot had grown beyond the size allowed under the competition's rules.

The pumpkin was heavier than the winning entry, which weighed 1,542 pounds. Now it is a treat for polar bears Ganuk and Henry, who can explore, push and eat it.

Warner began donating giant pumpkins to the habitat last year. He has been growing them for about 20 years and set an Ontario record in 2024 with a pumpkin weighing 1,966.5 pounds.

This year's pumpkin didn't win a ribbon, but it won't go to waste.

TDSS Brings Back Classic Rock

The sounds of the 1950s and 60s are coming to Timiskaming District Secondary School as students take the stage for a night of classic rock and roll.

The TDSS Rock Band Class, Northern Rock, is hosting a Coffee House on Thursday, October 29, featuring music from two memorable decades.

The show begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. in the TDSS cafeteria at 90 Niven Street in New Liskeard.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The evening will also include refreshments, door prizes and a 50/50 draw, with tickets available for $2 each.

It's a chance for the community to enjoy familiar music while giving local students an audience for their talents.

Water Shutdown, Road Closures Tuesday

Residents in parts of Temiskaming Shores should prepare for a temporary water shutdown and road closures today, Tuesday, October 27, as crews repair a water main valve.

Water service is expected to be shut off from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents may also experience low water pressure or discoloured water.

Road closures will affect three sections:

  • Broadwood Avenue between Market Street and Lakeshore Road North

  • Wedgewood Avenue between Lakeshore Road North and Market Street

Road work is scheduled between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Residents in the affected area may want to set aside drinking water ahead of the shutdown and plan alternate routes during the repairs.
