Have Stories Worth Sharing?

Pic Credit: TemiskamingShores.ca
What if your childhood memories, life experiences and favourite stories could become part of a young student's education?
The City of Temiskaming Shores is looking for volunteers aged 55 and older to participate in GrandPals, a program that brings older adults and elementary school students together through conversation, storytelling and friendship.
Volunteers meet weekly with small groups of students, sharing memories, photographs and personal experiences. The students ask questions, listen and eventually turn one of those experiences into a written and illustrated story.
The program includes three orientation sessions followed by eight to ten weekly classroom visits. No teaching or storytelling experience is required, just a willingness to share, listen and connect with young people.
Volunteers may be asked to complete an application, interview, reference check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Interested in becoming a GrandPal? Contact Alex Leveille, the City's Age Friendly Coordinator, at 705-647-5709 or [email protected].
You can also learn more at grandpals.ca.
Your Empties Could Make History

Pic Credit: The Beer Store
Got a collection of empty bottles and cans piling up in the garage? This Saturday might be the perfect time to cash them in.
The Beer Store is inviting Ontarians, including residents of Temiskaming Shores and surrounding communities, to help set a Guinness World Records title for the most container deposit return transactions in 24 hours.
On Saturday, October 17, participating Beer Store locations will offer an extra 20% on eligible empty alcohol containers returned that day.
That means a bottle or can normally worth 10 cents will earn 12 cents, while a container with a 20-cent deposit will bring in 24 cents.
The province-wide challenge is about more than recycling. It's an opportunity for communities across Ontario to work together toward a world record, one bag of empties at a time.
The bonus is available Saturday only, at participating locations during regular business hours.
For details, visit The Beer Store's announcement.
