Why Aren't We Bartering More?

For the past few weeks, Tri Town Today has been sharing the story of Start The Barter, a new online marketplace created right here in Temiskaming Shores.

But rather than just writing about it, we decided to try it ourselves.

We needed drone footage of New Liskeard, Haileybury and Cobalt for our social media videos and images.

Start The Barter founder Kyle Chester had something we needed, and we had something he wanted.

So we made a trade.

Kyle provided the drone footage in exchange for four articles and a month of banner advertising in Tri Town Today.

No money changed hands.

We arranged everything through the app, going back and forth a few times until we were both comfortable with the exchange. Overall, it was straightforward, and we enjoyed the experience.

So Why Isn't Everyone Bartering?

As useful as bartering can be, there are some challenges.

First, you need to find someone who has what you want and also wants what you're offering. A plumber might need a new bicycle, but finding someone selling a bicycle who also needs plumbing work isn't always easy.

Then there's the question of value.

Is an hour of someone's time worth a used lawnmower? How many hours of work would make that a fair exchange?

And sometimes, what you have simply can't be divided into smaller pieces to make a trade work.

Money solves many of these problems, which is why we're so accustomed to using it.

There's also the issue of trust. Trading with someone you don't know requires confidence that both people will follow through.

That's the challenge Kyle is taking on.

Start The Barter gives people a place to find each other, discuss an exchange and build a reputation through user ratings. But the platform becomes more useful only when enough people participate.

Our experience showed that a trade doesn't have to be complicated. Both sides simply need something the other values and a willingness to work out the details.

Kyle deserves credit for taking an idea and turning it into something people in our community can actually use.

Building the app was one challenge. Encouraging people to change how they exchange goods and services may be an even bigger one.

Congratulations, Kyle, on what you've created. We wish you every success as you continue this challenging journey.

And to our readers, here's a question worth considering: What do you have that someone else might need?

Visit StartTheBarter.com to explore what's available or list something of your own.

Have You Built Something Interesting?

This concludes our four-part series on Start The Barter, but we'd love to discover more local ideas.

Have you created an app, found a unique use for technology or developed a new way to solve an everyday problem?

If you're doing something innovative here in Temiskaming, we'd love to hear from you.

Reach out to Tri Town Today. Your idea could be our next local spotlight.

Volunteer Firefighters Answer 126 Calls

When an emergency happens, it's often a neighbour who answers the call.

As part of Local Government Week, October 18 to 24, the City of Temiskaming Shores is recognizing the volunteers who serve in its three fire departments.

So far this year, those departments have responded to 126 calls, helping save an estimated $785,000 in property and assets.

Their work goes well beyond responding to emergencies. Volunteer firefighters also take part in training, fire prevention education, inspections and emergency preparedness.

And here's a shout-out to all the volunteer firefighters serving communities throughout our region. These are people who give up evenings, weekends and family time to train and respond when someone needs help.

To every volunteer firefighter across the Tri-Town area and beyond, thank you for being there when it matters most.

Temagami Grant Deadline Nears

A quick heads up to our neighbours in the south. Fall grant applications to the Temagami Community Foundation close Sunday, October 25.

The foundation is reminding applicants that a project budget is required. It must be submitted along with the application for the request to be considered.

Applicants can find instructions on the foundation's website and contact the foundation with questions.
