In the last article, I shared something Chris Gallagher and the Northern Hospice Care committee have discovered as they've travelled around our region talking about their vision.

People tell them stories.

Stories about parents, spouses, friends and neighbours. Different experiences, but often the same underlying message: families facing the end of life could use another option closer to home.

But stories alone don't build a hospice.

So what happens next?

When Chris and I talked, it became pretty clear that there isn't one big step that suddenly makes this happen. There are a lot of smaller ones, and the committee has been quietly working through them.

One of the biggest is becoming a registered charity.

Northern Hospice Care incorporated as a non-profit last July and, when we spoke, was working through the process of obtaining charitable status. That's an important step because it would allow the organization to issue tax receipts and open the door to larger grants, corporate sponsorships and other fundraising opportunities.

Because eventually, they're going to need money.

The committee has already been looking at potential properties, not because they're ready to buy tomorrow, but because they need to understand what's realistic. Chris told me suitable properties could range anywhere from roughly $400,000 to well over $1 million depending on the location and what's available.

That's a pretty big gap.

And it's one reason they've also been visiting municipal councils throughout the proposed service area.

Interestingly, Chris starts those presentations by telling councillors something they probably don't hear very often.

She's not there asking for money.

At least not directly.

Instead, Northern Hospice Care is asking municipalities to think about other ways they might be able to help. Could rental fees for municipal facilities be reduced when the group holds a fundraiser? Could municipalities alert them to grant opportunities they might otherwise miss? Could several organizations collaborate on a grant that benefits everyone?

And maybe most interesting of all...

If the right property becomes available, could someone simply let them know?

Chris shared examples of other Ontario hospices where municipalities played an important role in helping a community vision become a reality. That's why she's having these conversations now, long before Northern Hospice Care is ready to open its doors.

There is still a lot that has to happen.

Charitable status.

Fundraising.

Finding the right property.

Continuing to hear from the communities the hospice would serve.

And eventually turning all of that into the four or five-bedroom home we've talked about throughout this series.

When I first went to Chris's house, I was only there because I wanted two tickets to a Garden Tour.

Half an hour later, I drove away knowing considerably more about Northern Hospice Care than I did when I arrived, and wondering how Tri Town Today could help get their message out.

That's really what these articles have been about.

Not convincing you that a hospice should be built.

But introducing you to a group of local people who believe it should be, showing you what they're working toward, and giving you a chance to follow along as they try to make it happen.

For now, that's where the story sits.

But hopefully, it isn't where it ends.

Residents in parts of Haileybury should be prepared for a temporary water service disruption and road closure on Monday, August 10, while City crews complete a water main valve repair.

Water service will be shut off from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for residents on Morissette Drive and Rorke Avenue. Residents along Rorke Avenue between Cecil Street and Carter Boulevard may also experience water disruptions during the work.

Morissette Drive will be closed from Rorke Avenue to Georgina Avenue, with work expected to take place from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Northbound traffic on Rorke Avenue will also be reduced to one lane near Morissette Drive.

Residents in the affected area may experience low water pressure, discoloured water or no water while repairs are underway. Drivers are asked to use caution around crews and follow posted traffic directions.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 227 is looking for vendors for its Community Garage Sale on August 15 and 16, with table rentals available for $20.

Vendors must bring their own table, and all table rental proceeds support the Legion. To reserve a space, contact June at 705-498-3879.

Haileybury Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54 is bringing back its popular breakfast this Saturday Aug 8th and Sunday Aug 9th only, served from 7 a.m. to noon.

Enjoy a full breakfast for $12 for adults and $6 for children, with all your favourites plus a few delicious extras.

The Armstrong Township Public Library is hosting Magnet Fishing Week from August 10 to 15, inviting visitors to try their luck at catching magnetic fish for a chance to win prizes.

The free activity is open throughout the week at the library and is part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations.

Children 13 and under can enter the New Liskeard RAM Rodeo Colouring Contest for a chance to win before the rodeo rides into town.

Pick up a colouring sheet at New Liskeard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram or print one online, then return it by Thursday, August 13 at 1:30 p.m. The New Liskeard RAM Rodeo takes place August 15 and 16.

Registration is now open for 4-H Temiskaming Discovery Day, a free hands-on event for youth ages 6 to 12 on Saturday, August 29 at Kerns Hall.

The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is open to both 4-H members and non-members. Registration is limited to the first 20 participants, so families are encouraged to sign up early.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is inviting children ages 3 to 12 to take part in its TD Summer Reading Club Colouring Contest.

The contest runs from July 22 to August 12, with first-place prizes awarded in each age category. Pick up a colouring sheet at the library and submit your entry before the deadline.
