The Latchford Volunteer Fire Department has launched a new fundraiser that could also take care of a meal or two during the upcoming holiday season.

The department is taking pre-orders for meat pies, with two sizes available: 9-inch pies for $15 each and 6-inch pies for $10 each.

Organizers are promoting the pies as an easy option to have on hand for Thanksgiving or Christmas, while purchases will help support Latchford's volunteer fire department.

The department is encouraging residents to get their pre-orders in and thanked the community for continuing to support its fundraising efforts.

Timiskaming Home Support is looking for volunteers to help with its Meals on Wheels program, and the job involves more than delivering food.

The program provides meals to seniors and people living with mobility challenges or illness, helping them continue living independently in their own homes.

Volunteers deliver the meals, but that brief visit at the door can also provide something equally important: a friendly face and regular social contact.

For someone who spends much of their time alone, a quick conversation with a Meals on Wheels volunteer can become an important part of their day. The visit also provides some peace of mind by having someone regularly checking in.

Timiskaming Home Support is currently looking for compassionate community members interested in joining its volunteer delivery team.

The first pitches have been thrown at the Northern Showdowns Youth Championship, with a full evening of ball coming up Friday at the Earlton Ball Diamond.

The tournament got underway Thursday night with three games, and six more are scheduled Friday, beginning at 5 p.m. and continuing into the evening.

Friday's action starts with Low Elite Fade taking on Pink Pickles at 5 p.m. in U18 Co-Ed play. The U18 Boys take the field at 6 p.m. when Master Batters face Hog Riders, followed by Pitch Please vs. Bomb Squad at 7 p.m.

The evening continues with Hog Riders vs. Slotted Sluggers at 9 p.m., Pink Pickles vs. Bandits at 10 p.m. and Hog Riders vs. Master Batters at 11 p.m.

Then it's an early start Saturday, with the U13 Bison Ballers and Tangerine Tigers scheduled for 8 a.m.

The Northern Showdowns were created by friends Abraham Gauvreau Doupe and Dayton Rivard to give young players another opportunity to compete, make memories and experience the kind of northern sports community they both grew up with.

Some New Liskeard residents will be without water for several hours Friday while City crews complete a water service repair.

On Friday, September 4, water service affecting Grills Street is expected to be shut off from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The work will also require Grills Street to be closed between Regina Street and the dead end. Crews are expected to be working in the area from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents in the affected area should plan ahead for the water interruption, while drivers are asked to use an alternate route until the work is complete.

Temiskaming Transit will operate weekend service from Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7 for the Labour Day weekend. On those days, the last bus will leave Walmart at 9:20 p.m. and end in Cobalt at 10 p.m.

Regular service will operate on Friday, September 4 and resume on Tuesday, September

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.
