Take Tri Town Today with you. The Tri Town Today Tour is a quick, laid-back way to catch up on what’s happening around the Tri Towns while you’re on the go.

Three mornings a week, Jesse and Cole walk you through the latest local stories. Listen on your drive, while running errands, at the gym, walking the dog or wherever your day takes you.

New episodes arrive Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings on Spotify and soon on Apple.

One heads-up: Jesse and Cole are AI-generated hosts. The voices aren’t real, but the local stories they’re talking about are.

Northern College Gets $10.7M

Pic Credit: Northern College

Ten million dollars is a lot of reassurance for a northern college.

The Ontario government is putting $10.7 million into Northern College, part of a much bigger rethink of how the province funds post-secondary schools. All told, Ontario is adding $6.4 billion across colleges, universities and Indigenous institutes, plus another $1.7 billion for 70,000 new seats in programs where workers are needed most: healthcare, skilled trades, teaching and STEM.

For Northern, which stretches across 210,000 square kilometres and dozens of rural and remote communities, the money is aimed at the practical stuff: new facilities, training equipment and program development.

"We are incredibly proud to be receiving this essential funding expansion," said Mitch Dumas, the college's president and CEO. He called Northern a critical talent pipeline for local and regional industry in the northeast, a role the funding lets the college maintain and even expand.

Minister Nolan Quinn framed it as workforce protection: training skilled workers for decades to come while keeping education accessible and costs down for students and families.

For the Haileybury campus and the region, the practical meaning is the one Dumas named: better facilities and equipment turning into local graduates for local industry. That is the kind of investment that trains young people for jobs that actually exist up here.
