Researchers Want Your Travel Story

A research team with the Marathon Family Health Team and NOSM University is looking for Northeastern Ontario residents who have used the Northern Health Travel Grant within the past year.

The study aims to better understand the true cost of medically necessary travel for rural residents. Participants will be asked to complete a 15 to 20 minute survey about their most recent reimbursed medical trip, including travel expenses and other challenges they faced along the way.

Researchers hope the information will help assess how well the Northern Health Travel Grant offsets the financial burden of travelling long distances for healthcare.

To participate, individuals must be at least 18 years old, have travelled for medical care within the past year, and have received reimbursement through the Northern Health Travel Grant.

Participants may receive a $25 honorarium, although only a limited number remain available.

Researchers say they would also welcome responses from anyone willing to share their experience without receiving the honorarium, as they hope to gather as much information as possible to help paint a clearer picture of the financial impact of medical travel in Northern Ontario

Interested residents can contact researcher Travis Vosdingh at [email protected] for more information or to participate in the study.

Fire Ban Now In Effect

A municipal fire ban is now in effect for the City of Temiskaming Shores and the Township of Harris due to extreme forest fire conditions.

All burning permits have been suspended, and all open-air fires are prohibited, including fires used for cooking and warmth.

Residents are being asked to make alternate arrangements for cooking and heating, such as using propane stoves or charcoal burners designed for that purpose.

Fire officials thanked residents for their cooperation as dry conditions continue across the region.

STATO Trail Closed Thursday

A section of the STATO Trail near the Haileybury Marina will be temporarily closed on Thursday, June 4 while crews complete a water line repair.

The closure affects the portion of the trail between the Haileybury Marina and Harbour Place.

Work is expected to take place from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., although the trail will remain closed until repairs are complete.

Residents and trail users are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews carry out the work safely.

The City of Temiskaming Shores thanked residents for their patience and understanding during the repair.
