More Than a Full Fridge

For someone struggling to put fresh food on the table, a fridge filled with fruits and vegetables can make a difference.

On Tuesday, October 27, Giant Tiger helped make that possible with a donation to the Temiskaming Shores Community Fridge.

The donation filled the fridge with apples, oranges, bananas, leafy greens, peppers, carrots and other groceries.

The Community Fridge operates in partnership with the Community Food Action Network and offers a simple way for neighbours to help neighbours.

Anyone can take what they need or leave food for others. Along with fresh produce, the initiative accepts pantry staples and other essentials.

Located at the Temiskaming Shores Public Library in New Liskeard, the fridge helps make donated food available to community members without requiring them to explain why they need it.

Giant Tiger's contribution is a reminder that behind every donated bag of groceries is an opportunity to make someone's day a little easier.

Downtown Halloween Haunt

Downtown New Liskeard is daring you to enter — if you dare.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Downtown New Liskeard BIA throws open its Annual Halloween Haunt. From 3 to 5 PM on October 30, more than 35 participating businesses across downtown will be welcoming visitors to stop in.

The list runs the length of downtown — Northern Drugs, Pizza Pizza, the Temiskaming Library, OK Tire, and dozens more, from shops and restaurants to banks and services. It's the kind of afternoon where the whole main street gets into the spirit together.

As the BIA puts it: come out tomorrow and get your spooky on. Friday, October 30, 3 to 5 PM, downtown New Liskeard.

$150,000 Boost for Mining Education

Pic Credit: Northern College

Northern College's Haileybury School of Mines is getting a $150,000 boost from the RBC Foundation to help prepare students for careers in a changing mining industry.

The funding will support the school's ongoing revitalization, including improvements to classrooms and laboratories at Northern College campuses.

The college is working with industry partners to update its mining programs as new technology changes the skills employers need.

Jamie Johnston, Northern's Dean of Mining, Trades, Technology and Apprenticeship, says the college has spent the past two years modernizing its mining education programs.

The donation will also support student recruitment and curriculum development as Northern Ontario's mining industry looks for more skilled workers.

For students considering a future in mining, the investment is intended to help ensure their training reflects the equipment, technology and skills they'll encounter in the workforce.

The funding is part of Northern College's broader effort to connect local education with the region's growing demand for skilled workers.
