Part 4 of 4 – One Shift Matters

Most people think volunteering means making a huge commitment.

Diane Vachon hears that all the time.

The truth?

One morning.

Or one afternoon.

Once a month.

That's all it takes to become part of the volunteer team at the Temiskaming Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop.

When Diane talks about volunteering, she's speaking from experience.

After serving as President of the Temiskaming Hospital Auxiliary for 10 years, she stepped in to take over the Gift Shop after the volunteer responsible for purchasing passed away.

"I didn't want this to fall apart," she says.

Today, she works alongside a dedicated group of volunteers who welcome shoppers, organize displays and help create a warm, inviting place for patients, families, visitors and the community.

More importantly...

They enjoy being there.

"We're a good group," Diane says. "We all get along, and I really enjoy what I'm doing."

That sense of community is what has kept many volunteers coming back year after year.

The time commitment is small.

The impact isn't.

Every shift helps keep one of Temiskaming Shores' most unexpected little boutiques running. Every purchase continues supporting healthcare close to home. And every volunteer becomes part of the story behind it.

If you've ever thought about volunteering but assumed you didn't have enough time...

Maybe it's time to think again.

Spend a few hours with great people.

Leave knowing you made a difference.

We’re always looking to highlight local business, events and stories in the area. If you would like a spotlight on your business then Apply Here.

Playground Bingo Challenge

Looking for an easy way to keep the kids active before the school year begins? The City of Temiskaming Shores has launched a fun August challenge that encourages families to explore local parks one playground at a time.

The Playground Bingo card features nine playgrounds across Dymond, Haileybury, New Liskeard and North Cobalt. Visit each location, mark it off your card and see if your family can complete the full bingo before summer comes to an end.

The featured playgrounds include Firefighters Park, Shaver Park, Christian Park, Harbour Place Park, Campsell Park, Algonquin Regiment Memorial Beach Park, Spurline Park, Lions Park and Kinsmen Park.

Whether you visit one playground a week or try to check off several in a day, it's a great excuse to get outside, explore different neighbourhoods and make the most of the final weeks of summer.
