The Shoebox Problem

Years ago, a landscaping company would pull four or five employees off their regular jobs to sort through boxes of receipts.

Instead of building patios and walkways, they were sitting on the floor spread out in the owner's living room, trying to figure out what had been purchased and why.

All so the paperwork could go to the accountant.

Sound familiar?

Mykal Petersen, owner of NorthSync in New Liskeard, says it's a problem many small business owners still face.

Receipts get tossed into trucks, personal and business purchases get mixed together, and months later nobody remembers what that $187 purchase was for.

Those forgotten receipts can mean missed deductions and extra accounting costs.

But Mykal has a simpler approach.

A contractor picks up supplies, gets back into the truck, takes a picture of the receipt and uploads it.

That's it.

The picture goes to a private online portal, and Mykal takes care of recording and organizing the transaction.

If he's at his desk, he says the receipt might be processed before the contractor even leaves the parking lot.

His goal is to reduce the time clients spend managing their bookkeeping to less than 30 minutes a month.

And if you're already sitting on six months of receipts?

He can help with that too.

With tax season approaching, perhaps there's a better way to spend your evenings than sorting through a shoebox.

Especially when there's someone right here in New Liskeard who actually enjoys doing the books.

And your employees might appreciate it too.

I know I would have. I was one of those landscaping employees sitting on that living room floor.

Local Music Honours Remembrance Day

An evening of live music will bring local performers together in New Liskeard for a special Remembrance Day edition of The Coffee House.

The event takes place Tuesday, November 10, from 7 to 10 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church Auditorium, 70 Wellington Street.

The evening will feature a lineup of local musicians and entertainers, including Buffalo Road Acoustic, Jessica Lemay Vocal Students, Darren Bougie, Jesse and Audry Raycraft, Alex Wight, Zachery Mauno, GM Blacktop and Random Chants.

The Coffee House regularly brings local Canadian musicians together, giving performers a place to share their music with the community.

This special edition takes place on the eve of Remembrance Day, combining the group's support for local music with an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of remembrance.

Residents are invited to come out, enjoy an evening of live performances and support the musicians who help keep the local music scene alive.

Ski Village Receives $208,004

A refurbished snow groomer and other equipment are on the way for Tri-Town Ski and Snowboard Village in North Cobalt, thanks to $208,004 in provincial funding.

The money, announced November 5 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, will also help the ski hill install an air-conditioning unit. The village offers downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing to families in the Temiskaming Shores area.

Club president Mark Howey says the investment will help improve equipment reliability and allow the village to expand its operating hours. He noted that the hill has been bringing generations together for 70 years.

The local grant is part of more than $1.8 million announced for 11 northern Ontario tourism businesses and attractions. The announcement was made at the Northern Ontario Tourism Summit in Sault Ste. Marie.

Electra Refinery Workforce Doubles

Construction activity is picking up at Electra Battery Materials' cobalt refinery in Temiskaming Shores, where the site workforce has grown from about 60 people in August to 130.

In an October 26 update, Electra said the project remains within its US$73 million construction budget. Work has moved beyond foundations and steel structures into equipment installation, building enclosure and electrical work.

The company plans to begin selected commissioning activities before the end of 2026. It is targeting mechanical completion in the second quarter of 2027 and commercial production in the fourth quarter of that year.

Glencore is expected to supply cobalt feedstock for commissioning and ramp-up through 2027, with longer-term supply arrangements through 2031. Electra also says about 60 per cent of planned cobalt sulphate output through 2029 is committed to battery maker LG Energy Solution.

The refinery is being built to process cobalt into material used in rechargeable batteries. The construction milestones are company targets, not completed production dates.
