Hudson Township is inviting families to spend Saturday at Pike Lake Park for its 3rd Annual Day in the Park, with activities running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hopefully the rain wraps up before the festivities begin, setting the stage for a great day at Pike Lake Park.

The celebration features something for every age, including a vendor market, beach volleyball, rock climbing, a foam party, arts and crafts, lawn games, a show and shine, children's activities and a barbecue fundraiser. Community competitions in baking, photography, arts and crafts and more will also be part of the day.

Visitors can also receive a ticket for a chance to win participation and attendance prizes, with prize draws taking place throughout the event.

Whether you're entering a competition, cheering on participants or simply looking for a family outing, Day in the Park offers a full day of community fun in Hudson Township.

Temiskaming Shores Animal Services is asking for the public's help to reunite a found cat with its owner.

The seal point coloured cat was found in the Haileybury area on Tuesday, July 30, and is currently being cared for at the City Animal Pound. Staff describe the cat as scared, with no collar and no microchip.

If you believe this may be your cat, or you recognize it from the photo, contact the City Animal Pound as soon as possible. Even if the cat isn't yours, sharing the notice could help reunite it with its family.

When I talked with Alexandra Leveille, the City of Temiskaming Shores' Age Friendly Coordinator, one number caught my attention.

Between 300 and 400 local seniors regularly take part in the City's programs.

That's encouraging.

But what surprised me even more was hearing that many seniors still believe there's nothing available for them.

The reality is quite the opposite.

Every month, the City coordinates a wide range of activities that help older adults stay active, meet new people and spend time together. Some programs focus on fitness, while others are simply an opportunity to enjoy a shared activity and make new friends. Many are free, and others have only a small fee.

Alex told me that one of her biggest goals is simply helping people discover what's already available. Once someone attends a program for the first time, they often build friendships, find rides with other participants and become part of a welcoming community.

That conversation got me thinking.

Tri Town Today has always been about helping people discover what's happening across our region. We share events every day, but sometimes a calendar only tells you when something is happening. It doesn't tell you why people keep coming back.

Beginning this month, you'll occasionally see the City's Age Friendly calendar featured in Tri Town Today. More importantly, every few weeks we'll introduce you to one of the programs, the people behind it and the stories that make it worth checking out.

If you're curious about what these programs are like, you won't have to wait long. One of the first activities on August's calendar is Horseshoes, taking place Tuesday, August 4, at 10 a.m. at the Algonquin Beach Park pits in New Liskeard. Whether you've played for years or simply want to spend some time outdoors meeting new people, it's one of many opportunities available throughout the month.

Whether you're looking for something for yourself, a parent, a neighbour or a friend, I hope these stories help more people discover opportunities they may not have known existed.

Because sometimes all it takes is knowing where to start.

Tuesday, August 4 | 10:00 a.m. | Algonquin Beach Park pits, New Liskeard

Enjoy a relaxed morning outdoors while meeting others in the community. Whether you're an experienced player or just curious to try, everyone is welcome.

The Temagami Lions Club Flea Market returns August 1 to 3, offering antiques, collectibles, household items and other unique finds throughout the weekend.

Browse the vendors while supporting the Temagami Lions Club and the community projects it funds. Saturday hours are 2 to 7 p.m., with the market open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Elk Lake's Civic Holiday Weekend runs July 31 to August 3, featuring baseball tournaments, live music, fireworks and family activities throughout the weekend.

Visitors can also enjoy face painting, a foam party, bounce castle, food vendors and more, with activities for all ages.

Temiskaming Transit will operate regular service on Friday, July 31, and Tuesday, August 4, with weekend service in effect on August 1, 2 and 3.

On the weekend service days, the last bus leaves Walmart at 9:20 p.m. and arrives in Cobalt at 10 p.m.

Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen is offering pony rides on Saturday Aug1st, Sunday closed, Monday Aug 3rd from 12 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. during the long weekend.

For $7, children receive a pony ride and an animal feed cone for the petting farm. The farm is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and closed Sunday.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is inviting children ages 3 to 12 to take part in its TD Summer Reading Club Colouring Contest.

The contest runs from July 22 to August 12, with first-place prizes awarded in each age category. Pick up a colouring sheet at the library and submit your entry before the deadline.

The Northern Ontario Art Association's 69th Annual Juried Exhibition is on display at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake from July 17 to August 15.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission to the reception is a coin donation at the door.

Northern College alumni who sign up for Alumni Perks by September 1, 2026 will be entered for a chance to win a Sleeping with the Wolves getaway at Cedar Meadows in Timmins.

The prize includes a one-night stay in the Sleeping with the Wolves cabin and a $150 gift card for Cedar Meadows Steakhouse. Alumni can register through the Northern College Alumni Perks program before the deadline.
