A five-day hands-on building workshop is coming to Kirkland Lake next week, offering participants a chance to learn how homes can be built using natural materials.

The Dabinoo’igan Building Workshop runs August 24 to 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Kinoomaagegamik Training Centre, 175 Government Rd. in Kirkland Lake.

Led by Cassondra Lasdin and Kris Bailey, the workshop will focus on building with straw bale and hempcrete, giving participants practical experience working with both materials.

Registration is open to registered apprentices from any trade, as well as Indigenous women interested in learning how to build their own homes using natural materials. An honorarium will be provided for participants' time, and space is limited.

For those who are curious but aren't looking to take part in the full five-day workshop, there is another option: community members are welcome to come observe for one day at no cost.

Over the past couple of days, we've shared how two childhood rivals became close friends and why they're now creating a youth tournament built around something bigger than winning.

On September 4 to 6, we'll finally get to see what Northern Showdowns looks like when players take to the Earlton Ball Diamond.

The weekend will feature youth slo-pitch in three divisions, along with a home run derby open to any U18 player. There will be prizes connected to sponsors who have helped make the tournament possible.

Off the field, spectators will be able to grab hot food from a chip stand, while some of the tournament's young volunteers will be selling lemonade. There's also a nearby park where younger children can play.

And organizers aren't only inviting the families of players.

Community members who want to help are welcome too. Abraham Gauvreau Doupe says support doesn't necessarily have to mean taking on a formal volunteer role.

“We mostly need help with making sure that the spirits stay high and the community stays strong,” he said. “The goal of this tournament is community.”

Perhaps that's why Gauvreau Doupe's answer was a little different when we asked him why someone without a child or family member playing should come to the Earlton Ball Diamond.

“For those who seek to know what the northern crowd is really like, the Northern Showdowns is the place to see where the magic happens,” he said.

“The magic is not about the game, but how we get together within the game.”

Years ago, Gauvreau Doupe and Dayton Rivard stood on opposite sides of the field, two Northern kids representing different communities and trying to beat each other.

Today, they're close friends building something together.

Maybe somewhere on the Earlton Ball Diamond this Labour Day weekend, that same story will begin again.

“Even if we are on opposite sides of the field, everyone is welcome,” Gauvreau Doupe said.

A friendly, neutered male black cat was found on Pine Avenue in New Liskeard on Wednesday, August 19 and is currently being cared for at the City of Temiskaming Shores Animal Pound.

The cat was not wearing a collar and does not have a microchip. Anyone who believes this may be their cat is asked to contact Animal Control at 705-672-3363 ext. 4134 as soon as possible.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.

The New Liskeard Lions Club is selling tickets for its Butchers Raffle, with proceeds supporting Northern Hospice Care.

Tickets are $10 for a chance to win the grand prize of a hind quarter of beef from Yves Prime Cuts with a freezer from The Brick, or the second prize of a side of pork from Yves Prime Cuts. Tickets will be available at at Walmart on August 27.

The Cobalt Silver Nugget Race takes place Sunday, August 23 at 2 p.m. at Tina’s Trail in Cobalt, and there’s still time to get your nugget in the race.

Tickets are $10, with a $1,500 jackpot up for grabs. Each ticket represents one silver nugget, with 10 heats leading to a final race to determine the winner based on how far the nugget rolls. Tickets are available at the Cobalt Mining Museum.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.

The evening is a chance to celebrate the volunteers, teamwork and community effort that helped make the Legion's Centennial celebrations possible. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by commenting on the original Facebook post.
