Clothing Drive Seeks Winter Boots

A winter clothing drive is looking for wide pull-on boots in a men's size 9.5 or 10 for an 11-year-old. Organizers have also put out a call for women's small ski pants.
The local family behind the drive says the goal is to help make sure people who are homeless or otherwise in need stay warm this winter. They are collaborating with One Light Diversity Centre on its Snowbody program.
The ongoing drive accepts new or gently used coats, hats, mittens, boots and blankets in sizes for both children and adults. The family is also putting together care packs, so new personal items such as toothbrushes, hand and foot warmers and hygiene products are welcome too. Those items must be new.
The main drop-off is at 90 Whitewood Ave. in New Liskeard on Tuesdays and Fridays. Donations can also be left at One Light Diversity Centre, or at Temiskaming Church, 583472 West Road in Haileybury, on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
People who need winter clothing, or know someone who does, can send the organizer a private message through the original Facebook post. Organizers say they are working to arrange more drop-off locations.
The specific requests give residents a clear way to help meet needs already identified by the organizers.

Legion Helps Keep Hockey Affordable

A $6,000 donation from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 87 in Kirkland Lake will help keep the local Timbits hockey program available at a greatly reduced rate.
The Legion 87 Timbits page shared news of the sponsorship on October 29. The contribution supports Kirkland Lake Minor Hockey's program for young players.
Timbits players Bodyn, Wesley and Colten were pictured with Branch 87 president John MacDonell and Kirkland Lake Minor Hockey Association president Kristal Spadetto at the cheque presentation.
The funding helps lower the cost of taking part in the program for local families.

Halloween Spiders That Grow

Pic Credit: Aidie Creek Gardens
Not every Halloween spider needs to be scary. Some might even grow leaves.
The Englehart and District Horticultural Society is bringing a hands-on gardening craft to Aidie Creek Gardens' Halloween Fall Fun Day on Saturday, October 31.
Children can create a spider-themed planter using a small plant, a decorated cup and pipe-cleaner legs. It's a Halloween craft with something living inside.
The activity begins at 11 a.m. and will continue while supplies last.
The workshop gives young visitors a chance to get creative while discovering a little about gardening.
It's one of the activities planned for Aidie Creek Gardens' Halloween celebration, bringing together fall fun and a little green-thumb creativity.
