Highway 11: No Deaths Acceptable
For families who have lost loved ones on Highway 11, the grief never fully goes away. But what if our roads could be designed so that a simple mistake doesn't cost someone their life?
That's the question behind a new 10-minute video telling the story of Going the Extra Mile for Safety (GEMS), a subcommittee of the Temiskaming Shores & Area Chamber of Commerce.
The video shares the stories of families who have lost loved ones in highway crashes and the local effort to make Northern Ontario roads safer.
That effort has helped secure commitments for two 15-kilometre pilot projects on Highway 11 using a road design known as 2+1.
The idea comes from Sweden, where a road safety philosophy called Vision Zero is built around a simple belief: nobody should have to die on the roads.
Rather than expecting drivers to never make mistakes, Sweden began designing roads that could help prevent those mistakes from becoming fatal.
The 2+1 design uses alternating passing lanes with a crash-rated centre barrier separating opposing traffic. Drivers get regular opportunities to pass slower vehicles without crossing into oncoming traffic.
GEMS members travelled to Sweden to learn about the design and how it has been used to reduce serious highway crashes.
According to GEMS, 2+1 highways can offer major safety improvements at a lower cost than traditional four-lane divided highways. They can also follow existing routes without bypassing communities that depend on highway traffic.
Through its GEMS subcommittee, the Temiskaming Shores & Area Chamber of Commerce has helped bring a local concern to the attention of provincial decision-makers.
For the families featured in the video, the goal goes beyond two pilot projects. It's about a future where losing someone on the highway is no longer accepted as an unavoidable part of driving.

Could Your Child Be A Comedian?

Does your child or grandchild love making people laugh? Maybe they're always coming up with funny stories or have a knack for making others smile.
École secondaire catholique Sainte-Marie is offering a free workshop on Wednesday, November 4 for students in Grades 7 to 12 who want to try their hand at comedy.
Running from noon to 2:55 p.m., the workshop will teach students how to write humour and create their own stand-up comedy routine.
There's also an opportunity for participants to represent their school in a provincial comedy competition, with prizes and scholarships up for grabs.
Only 20 spaces are available.
Parents and grandparents who know a young person with a funny side might want to encourage them to give it a try.
Interested students can register by visiting Mrs. Roberge at the school office or contacting her by email.
