A Community Centre by Phone

For some older adults, getting out to a community program isn't always easy. Timiskaming Home Support is bringing the community to them instead.
Its Seniors' Centre Without Walls is a free telephone-based program that allows seniors and adults with social limitations to connect with others and participate in activities without leaving home.

Participants simply join by telephone for structured group sessions that can include music, seated stretching, trivia, games, birthday celebrations and other learning and wellness activities.
The idea is about more than filling an afternoon. The program is designed to help reduce loneliness and isolation by giving people an opportunity to talk, laugh, learn and participate with others, even when mobility, transportation or other circumstances make attending activities in person difficult.
Timiskaming Home Support has programming planned throughout September, October and November, and there is no charge to participate.
Family members can also register a loved one who might benefit from having another regular connection in their week.
To learn more or register, call 1-877-318-9678 ext. 2203 or email [email protected].

Help Fill the Kerns Community Fridge

Pic Credit: Kerns Public School
As students settle back into the classroom, Kerns Public School is asking the community for a little help filling its Community Fridge.
The rural school, which serves students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6, is collecting food that can be used for lunches and snacks and to help support Kerns families.
The school is looking for granola bars, crackers, cookies, lunch meat, cheese and other snacks, along with meal items such as ground beef, taco kits and frozen pizzas. Gift cards and monetary donations are also welcome.
It’s a simple way for the wider community to make sure families have a little extra support when they need it.
Donations can be dropped off at Kerns Public School Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Anyone who would like to donate but needs their contribution picked up, or has questions about what is needed, can text 705-676-6587.
Every item added to the fridge is one more lunch, snack or meal available to a local family.
