Earlier this we introduced you to nine-year-old Rene Denomme and his dream of owning a business.

After the story was published, his grandmother Peggy shared one more detail that says a lot about the kind of young entrepreneur Rene hopes to become.

"I asked Rene why he wanted to own a business," she says.

His answer was simple.

"I want to be like Didas. Everyone loves Didas, so I want everyone to love my business."

That same care shows up in the menu at Denomme Lemonade.

"I wanted to make drinks that are just my specialty," Rene says.

Each one has its own story.

Gone Fishing is named after his cousin Adrien, who's always fishing. Avery's Unicorn Kisses is named after his sister because she loves unicorns. Laila's Mermaid is named after his one-year-old cousin, while Caleb's Root Beer Surprise comes with a flavoured straw.

So far, Gone Fishing has been the stand's biggest seller.

But if someone has never stopped by before, Rene has another recommendation.

"Try the Root Beer Surprise."

He says many of the syrups they use are sugar free, making it one of his favourite drinks on the menu.

Running a business has also taught the boys a few lessons. Before setting up in a new location, they ask local businesses and municipalities for permission and make sure they have the proper permit.

When asked what advice he'd give another young entrepreneur, Rene already had his answer ready.

"Pick your business name and call Matt from Northern Signs. He made all my logos and did a good job."

If you haven't met Rene and Caleb yet, you'll have another chance this Saturday at Hudson Township's Day in the Park.

You might stop by for a cold drink, but you'll leave knowing you've supported two young entrepreneurs who are learning that a great business isn't just about what you sell. It's about the people you serve.

One of the areas longest-running summer traditions is marking a major milestone this year.

Elk Lake's 75th Civic Holiday Weekend runs from July 31 to August 3, bringing together baseball, family activities, live entertainment and community celebrations for four days of fun.

The weekend features fastball and slo-pitch tournaments, along with a full schedule of activities including Science North, face painting, foam parties, wax hands, bouncy castles, Z-Tag, sawdust scrambles and a duck race on the Makobe River.

Evening entertainment includes live music from DJ Bros on Saturday and Rock Slide on Sunday, while the annual fireworks display lights up the sky Sunday night. Families can also enjoy the popular boat parade, and baseball fans can catch games throughout the weekend.

Organizers are thanking Ash Roy for once again coordinating the baseball tournament, along with the many volunteers whose efforts make the annual celebration possible.

Whether you're coming for the ball tournament, the family activities or simply to celebrate 75 years of community tradition, Elk Lake's Civic Holiday Weekend promises something for every age.

Planning is underway for the 2026 Englehart Slo-Pitch Tournament, and organizers are looking for local businesses and entertainers to help make this year's event a success.

The Englehart Special Events Committee is inviting proposals for security services, portable toilet services, food vendors and entertainment for the tournament, taking place September 11 to 13.

Organizers are also encouraging businesses and individuals with unique attractions, services or ideas that don't fit those categories to reach out. Whether it's a family activity, specialty vendor or something different, they're open to hearing new ideas that could enhance the weekend.

Proposal documents, submission requirements and deadlines are available through the Town of Englehart's Bids & Tenders page.

The committee is encouraging interested businesses and service providers to apply early and help make one of the community's biggest annual events another success.

Traffic is now flowing across the new Highway 11 bridge near Earlton, marking a major milestone for motorists and the community.

At approximately 140 metres long, the new structure is Ontario's longest fully integral, post-tensioned bridge. Construction included a continuous 42.5-hour concrete pour, using 1,100 cubic metres of concrete delivered by 141 concrete trucks, with the bridge supported by more than 80 piles driven into bedrock.

While the bridge represents the future of Highway 11, it also shines a light on the area's past.

When the original Earlton bypass officially opened on October 18, 1961, Reeve J. Brule joined provincial officials for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. A local resident recently shared the commemorative ribbon-cutting scissors presented for that occasion, along with the original letter sent to Reeve Brule following the opening.

Nearly 65 years later, another generation is witnessing a new chapter in the community's transportation history as vehicles begin crossing the replacement bridge.

Drivers are reminded that traffic patterns in the area have changed. Motorists should reduce their speed, follow all signs and pavement markings, watch for vehicles entering the highway, and remain alert for emergency vehicles and construction activity as work continues nearby.

Elk Lake's Civic Holiday Weekend runs July 31 to August 3, featuring baseball tournaments, live music, fireworks and family activities throughout the weekend.

Visitors can also enjoy face painting, a foam party, bounce castle, food vendors and more, with activities for all ages.

Temiskaming Transit will operate regular service on Friday, July 31, and Tuesday, August 4, with weekend service in effect on August 1, 2 and 3.

On the weekend service days, the last bus leaves Walmart at 9:20 p.m. and arrives in Cobalt at 10 p.m.

Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen is offering pony rides on Saturday Aug1st, Sunday closed, Monday Aug 3rd from 12 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. during the long weekend.

For $7, children receive a pony ride and an animal feed cone for the petting farm. The farm is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and closed Sunday.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is inviting children ages 3 to 12 to take part in its TD Summer Reading Club Colouring Contest.

The contest runs from July 22 to August 12, with first-place prizes awarded in each age category. Pick up a colouring sheet at the library and submit your entry before the deadline.

The Northern Ontario Art Association's 69th Annual Juried Exhibition is on display at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake from July 17 to August 15.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission to the reception is a coin donation at the door.

Northern College alumni who sign up for Alumni Perks by September 1, 2026 will be entered for a chance to win a Sleeping with the Wolves getaway at Cedar Meadows in Timmins.
