If you've wondered what happens inside Vibe Studio but weren't quite ready to sign up for a class, there's a chance to try it without the pressure this Sunday.

Vibe Studio is holding a free 45-minute introductory workshop on Sunday, August 30 at 10 a.m. at 7 Riverside Drive in New Liskeard.

The open house is designed for newcomers who want to learn about Vibe's overhead resistance band workouts before jumping into a regular class. Instructors will break down how the workout works, explain some of the movements and give participants an opportunity to try a move or two.

The classes combine suspension-based resistance training with movements inspired by functional fitness, high-intensity interval training and yoga, with a focus on building strength and maintaining mobility.

And if you've been avoiding Vibe because you don't think you're fit enough to participate, this workshop is specifically meant to make that first visit a little easier.

Some of Englehart's youngest gardeners have been putting their green thumbs to work this summer, continuing a tradition that goes back almost as far as the Englehart & District Horticultural Society itself.

The Society recently announced the winners of its 2026 Youth Garden Competition, recognizing young gardeners from JK through Grade 6 for the work they put into growing and caring for their gardens.

In the JK/SK division, Riley Campbell took first place, followed by Kobe Pichette in second.

For Grades 1–3, Lyla Rozell earned first place, Hannah Veley finished second and Jace Pichette placed third.

In the Grades 4–6 division, Brayden Rozell took first, Ava Belanger finished second and Leona Campbell placed third.

The Society also thanked the parents who encouraged the young gardeners throughout the competition, along with judges Dorothy and Carol for their time. An awards ceremony recognizing the participants will be held this winter.

Almost 70 Years of Growing

The youth competition is a good example of what the Englehart & District Horticultural Society has been trying to do since its beginning.

The organization was formed in 1956, but its roots actually go back one year earlier, when the Englehart Agricultural Show was unexpectedly postponed. Some flowers that had been grown specifically to bloom for the show wouldn't last another week, so Mr. and Mrs. Bryan displayed their flowers at their home instead.

Seventy-two people came to see 128 exhibits.

That evening helped spark the idea for a local horticultural society, and on February 13, 1956, the Englehart & District Horticultural Society held its first meeting at the Town Hall. Among its original goals were improving home and public grounds, sharing horticultural knowledge and getting young people interested in gardening.

That last goal has stuck around.

Junior competitions were eventually added to the Society's flower show, and by 1965, a Junior Club had been established. Decades later, the Society continues to encourage young gardeners through competitions like the one held this summer.

The Society's work also extends beyond its youth programs.

Over the years, members have helped beautify Englehart through community plantings and gardens. Today, its activities include monthly meetings, educational speakers, a newsletter, plant sales, summer garden tours, Horticultural Week, competitions and workshops. The Society is also part of District 12 Northeastern Ontario of the Ontario Horticultural Association.

You don't have to be an experienced gardener to become involved. The Society describes itself as a group for people who enjoy gardening or simply want to learn more, with monthly meetings providing an opportunity to hear speakers, learn new skills and meet others who share an interest in plants and gardening.

Membership is currently listed at $10 per year.

Nearly 70 years after one of the Society's original goals was to get young people interested in horticulture, Riley, Kobe, Lyla, Hannah, Jace, Brayden, Ava and Leona are helping carry that tradition forward.

Temiskaming Shores City Hall, including the Provincial Offences Office, will be temporarily closed on Thursday, September 3, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Residents planning to visit City Hall that day are asked to plan around the brief closure.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

CJTT 104.5 FM is giving away $1,000 in groceries and $500 in gas, with prizes provided by Yves’ Prime Cut Meats, Breault Family Farm, Leis Landscaping Yard & Country Store and Earlton Timber Mart.

Enter by filling out a ballot at participating businesses for a chance to win the grand prize. Several businesses are also offering additional door prizes, including gift cards, a barbecue, patio chairs, an area rug and more.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.
