Earlier this month, Tri Town Today shared how the Temiskaming Northern Loons are bringing underwater coaching technology to local swimmers thanks to support from One Foot Forward.

That story introduced the project.

This one is about the people behind it.

Who is One Foot Forward, and why does it continue investing in opportunities for local children?

For Shelly Zubyck and her family, the answer begins with Greyson.

After losing their son, they wanted to honour his life by creating opportunities for other children to participate, grow and succeed. What began as a way to remember one little boy has grown into a community legacy that has now donated more than $230,500 to local youth organizations over the past decade.

"While we're incredibly proud of the amount that has been donated, it's not about the number," Shelly said.

"It's about the lives that have been touched along the way. Every child who has received support, every organization we've partnered with and every opportunity we've helped create is a reminder that Greyson's spirit continues to make a difference in our community."

That philosophy is what led One Foot Forward to support the Temiskaming Northern Loons' SONR Underwater Communication Project.

"What stood out to us was the project's focus on inclusion and safety," Shelly said. "Every child deserves the opportunity to participate, learn and reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they may face."

For the Zubyck family, the impact goes far beyond purchasing equipment.

"We hope they gain confidence, a sense of belonging and the ability to participate and have fun," Shelly said.

"Sports, recreation and community programs teach so much more than skills. They build friendships, resilience, teamwork and self-confidence. If our support helps one child feel included, encourages them to try something new or gives them the confidence to pursue their goals, then we've accomplished what we set out to do in Greyson's memory."

Looking ahead, Shelly hopes One Foot Forward will continue supporting organizations that create meaningful opportunities for children and youth throughout the region.

More importantly, she hopes the legacy will continue long after today's generation.

"The way One Foot Forward is established is that one day it will be Kohen, Sutton and Weston saying 'yes,' and then our future grandchildren after that," she said.

Shelly says One Foot Forward has only been possible because of the volunteers, sponsors, participants and supporters who have stood beside their family over the past decade.

"While Greyson's name is at the heart of everything we do, this has truly become a community legacy," she said. "We are deeply grateful to everyone who has helped us turn remembrance into opportunity for local children and youth."

"If One Foot Forward encourages compassion, generosity and community involvement for years to come, then Greyson's legacy will continue to live on in the best possible way."

A walk or bike ride along the STATO Trail is about to get a colourful twist.

The City of Temiskaming Shores and Northeastern Public Health are inviting residents to take part in the Colour Ride on Thursday, August 13, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Participants will walk or bike a 2-kilometre route starting at the Pool and Fitness Centre, passing through colourful powder stations along the way before finishing with a bike wash station.

The event is open to all ages and is designed to encourage physical activity while adding a little extra fun to the journey. Helmets are required for anyone participating by bike.

Pre-registration is required, and participants are asked to include their T-shirt size when registering.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is inviting children ages 3 to 12 to take part in its TD Summer Reading Club Colouring Contest.

The contest runs from July 22 to August 12, with first-place prizes awarded in each age category. Pick up a colouring sheet at the library and submit your entry before the deadline.

The Northern Ontario Art Association's 69th Annual Juried Exhibition is on display at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake from July 17 to August 15.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission to the reception is a coin donation at the door.

Northern College alumni who sign up for Alumni Perks by September 1, 2026 will be entered for a chance to win a Sleeping with the Wolves getaway at Cedar Meadows in Timmins.
