The Annual Elk Lake Music Festival takes over the Elk Lake Community Centre August 22 and 23, with a full weekend of live music, food and community fun.

Saturday gets underway with an open mic from 1 to 5 p.m., followed by a pig roast and smoked turkey dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The evening lineup includes Dave Rodgers & Friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by Stereotypical from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Vulturesque from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Stereotypical returns to close out the night.

Sunday morning begins with a breakfast and gospel music.

Tickets are available through the Elk Lake Legion Branch 310. Weekend passes are $35 for children ages 6 to 12 and $55 for adults, with several other ticket options available.

Long before Abraham Gauvreau Doupe and Dayton Rivard became close friends, they were kids from neighbouring communities trying to beat each other.

Gauvreau Doupe grew up in Temiskaming Shores, while Rivard grew up in Earlton. In youth slo-pitch, Gauvreau Doupe played for Temiskaming Shores and Rivard represented Earlton. On the ice, Gauvreau Doupe played for the New Liskeard Puckhounds while Rivard suited up for the Englehart Express.

From about eight to 13 years old, they were rivals.

Eventually, they became teammates on the basketball court at École secondaire catholique Sainte-Marie. After high school, the rivalry turned into a close friendship.

Now, at 24, Gauvreau Doupe can look back at those years and recognize something he probably couldn't see while he and Rivard were competing against each other.

The wins aren't necessarily what he remembers most.

“Although we think we play to win, our fondest memories do not highlight the win, but the team,” Gauvreau Doupe said.

That realization eventually led the two friends back to where their relationship started: competition.

This Labour Day weekend, they're launching the Northern Showdowns Youth Championship, a new youth slo-pitch tournament taking place September 4 to 6 at the Earlton Ball Diamond.

They see it as a way of giving another generation of Northern kids an opportunity to compete, but also to discover what they did.

“For the kids to know that opponents eventually become teammates, and that is how we grow.”

Years after starting on opposite sides of the field, Gauvreau Doupe and Rivard are now building something together.

And they've decided to start in the community where one half of their story began: Earlton.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.

The New Liskeard Lions Club is selling tickets for its Butchers Raffle, with proceeds supporting Northern Hospice Care.

Tickets are $10 for a chance to win the grand prize of a hind quarter of beef from Yves Prime Cuts with a freezer from The Brick, or the second prize of a side of pork from Yves Prime Cuts. Tickets will be available at at Walmart on August 27.

The Cobalt Silver Nugget Race takes place Sunday, August 23 at 2 p.m. at Tina’s Trail in Cobalt, and there’s still time to get your nugget in the race.

Tickets are $10, with a $1,500 jackpot up for grabs. Each ticket represents one silver nugget, with 10 heats leading to a final race to determine the winner based on how far the nugget rolls. Tickets are available at the Cobalt Mining Museum.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.

The evening is a chance to celebrate the volunteers, teamwork and community effort that helped make the Legion's Centennial celebrations possible. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by commenting on the original Facebook post.
