From Tropical Fish to Tropical Plants

Pic Credit: Plant Parenthood

What started as an idea for a tropical fish business has turned into something Joel and Anna Anderson didn’t originally expect: a shop filled with hundreds of tropical plants.

Plant Parenthood Tropical Houseplant Boutique & Nursery officially opened Friday at 210 Armstrong Street North in New Liskeard.

Joel originally planned a tropical fish business with a small plant section. But while researching that part of the idea, he realized houseplants could appeal to far more people. It also happened to be something Anna knew well after about 10 years of growing and caring for plants.

The idea quickly grew. Today, the shop has roughly 500 plants, including varieties not commonly available locally, with new inventory expected regularly.

Joel and Anna also want to help people who love plants but aren't quite sure how to keep them alive. Customers can ask about the specific plants they're buying and get practical care information rather than trying to figure out what instructions like "medium light" actually mean at home.

The couple says one of their biggest surprises has been the enthusiasm from the community before they even opened their doors.

A shout-out to local realtor Jaden Geoffrey, whose recent video interview with Joel and Anna gave the community a great behind-the-scenes look at the new business and helped us put this story together.

Plant Parenthood is open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 210 Armstrong Street North, New Liskeard.

Saturday's game costs $5 to enter with a donation of an item to the Salvation Army Food Bank. Goldbelt Supply Ltd. is the game day sponsor for both home games.

Highway 11 Closed Last Night

Highway 11 will close to all traffic Friday night between Highway 65 and Bedard Road while the Ministry of Transportation repairs the Ontario Northland railway crossing north of Bedard Road.

The closure starts Friday at 9 p.m. and runs until Sunday at 9 a.m. Traffic will follow the signed Emergency Detour Route along Golf Course Road and Highway 65 West. The detour is about 8.2 km and adds roughly eight minutes to the trip.

Local traffic can still move through Armstrong and Whitewood as usual. The Golf Course Road and Highway 11 intersection is expected to be much busier than normal, so the City of Temiskaming Shores will temporarily close the westbound access from Drive In Theatre Road to keep traffic moving safely.

Drivers should follow the posted signs, allow extra travel time, and use caution at the Highway 11 and Golf Course Road intersection.

TDSS Students Spell Out 215

Timiskaming District Secondary School students spelled out 215 on the school field Thursday, marking Orange Shirt Day in honour of the 215 children whose remains were identified at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

The 215 Every Child Matters shirts were printed locally by INKit Design & Print, which handled the artwork, printing, pressing and folding to have them ready for the day.

Students and staff wore orange for the day, organized with the school's Nibwakawin Committee. The day also included a moment of silence, a small ceremony and an honour song performed by TDSS students.

Orange Shirt Day is observed each September 30 as part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as survivors and their families.

The day takes its name from Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at St. Joseph Mission residential school in 1973.
