There are different ways to show up for World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday, September 10, including an early-morning gathering at New Liskeard Beach.

Timiskaming First Nation Firstline Services is hosting a Sunrise Plunge at 6:45 a.m., with participants meeting at the Mini Putt entrance.

Those taking part are asked to bring a bathing suit, towel, blanket, sandals and a change of clothes. Coffee and a light breakfast will be provided following the plunge.

Limited transportation to New Liskeard is available from Timiskaming First Nation, with participants asked to meet at the Youth Centre at 6 a.m. sharp.

And for those who can't make the morning plunge, there is another simple way to participate.

Community members are being encouraged to place a lit candle in their window at 8 p.m. Thursday evening as a visible show of support for World Suicide Prevention Day and those whose lives have been touched by suicide.

The Sunrise Plunge begins at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at New Liskeard Beach.

Tennis and pickleball players in Englehart have a fresh place to play.

The Englehart Racquet Courts are now open following a project that included resurfacing and redesigning the courts, along with the installation of new nets.

The upgraded courts are ready for both tennis and pickleball, allowing players to get back on the courts and enjoy the remaining weeks of the outdoor season.

The project was completed by Court Surface Specialists, with funding support from the Town of Englehart and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

Players are reminded that the courts are used at their own risk. Food, glass, alcoholic beverages, bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards and pets are not permitted, and proper footwear is required.

The work may be finished, but there is still more to come. Details of a Grand Opening Celebration will be announced at a later date.

For now, players can grab a racquet or paddle and try out the newly upgraded courts.

A longtime local business is showing off its newly renovated store this Friday while also celebrating a milestone: 120 years of serving the community.

Findlay’s Drug Store is holding a Renovation Celebration on Friday, September 11, with giveaways, food, special offers and a look back at the store's history planned throughout the day.

The celebration starts at 8 a.m., when the first 75 customers will receive an early-bird giveaway bag. Complimentary cupcakes and coffee will be served at 11 a.m., followed by food sampling at 2 p.m. and a coupon giveaway from 4 to 5 p.m., while supplies last.

Visitors can also enter several prize draws throughout the store, including a London Sunshine ceramic kamado charcoal BBQ valued at $500. Additional draws will be available in the cosmetics, giftware and home health departments. Entries close at 8 p.m., with winners selected Saturday morning.

There will also be in-store specials, including buy one regular-priced yellow or pink sticker item and get a second item of equal or lesser value for half price, along with double points on Option+ products.

Beyond the giveaways, Findlay’s is inviting people to come see the renovations and check out a photo wall featuring Findlay’s through the years, offering a glimpse into the history of a business that has now been part of the community for 120 years.

The Renovation Celebration takes place Friday, September 11, with activities happening throughout the day.

The Village of Thornloe parking lot is closed while work is completed to correct grading around the hall and mail kiosk to help prevent future flooding and water damage.

The park remains open, and residents can still access their mail from the park. Visitors are asked to watch for fencing and barriers and stay clear of construction areas.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
