A Northern Ontario favourite takes centre stage Friday afternoon at the Teck Centennial Public Library in Kirkland Lake.

Local residents can learn how to turn chokecherries into homemade jelly during a free Chokecherry Jelly Demonstration with Julie Weisflock on Friday, September 18 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Julie will show participants how to identify chokecherries, share her recipe for canning them into jelly and offer tips along the way. A few lucky participants may even head home with a jar of jelly.

The demonstration takes place in the library's downstairs CREATE Room and is open to all ages.

Registration is encouraged but not required. Those planning to attend are asked to call 705-567-7966 so the library can make sure there is enough seating.

It's a chance to learn a useful skill while celebrating a little Northern Ontario tradition.

The Cobalt Mining Museum is adding a little creativity to this year's Ontario Culture Days with a colouring and art contest inspired by Cobalt's four-legged residents.

The Cobalt the Dog Colouring Contest runs from September 18 to October 4. Colouring sheets can be picked up at the museum for those who want to take part.

Artists over 14 have another option. Instead of a colouring sheet, they can submit an original piece of artwork featuring Cobalt the Dog or their own pup.

The contest is part of the museum's Culture Days activities celebrating dogs and their connection to the Cobalt area.

Entries close October 4, with winners announced October 5. Stop by the Cobalt Mining Museum for colouring sheets, contest details and information about the prizes.

Pickleball season doesn't have to end when the colder weather arrives.

Englehart & Area Pickleball is moving indoors to Englehart High School beginning Thursday, September 24, with games scheduled Thursdays and Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.

The program is open to everyone from Grade 9 through adult, although players ages 14 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost is $15 for the entire season, which runs from September through June. Players should use the gym/arena entrance and bring appropriate indoor footwear.

Sessions won't run when school is closed for snow storms, PA days or holidays, so players are encouraged to check for updates before heading out.

Whether you're an experienced player or looking for another way to stay active through the winter, everyone is welcome to join in.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help and St. Patrick Parishes have moved their Share the Harvest tables outside and opened them to everyone in the community.

Thanks to donations from local gardeners, fresh produce is available free to anyone who can use it. You don't need to be a parishioner, and there's no cost. Simply stop by and take what you need.

Gardeners are also encouraged to contribute. If the garden is still producing more than your household can use, surplus vegetables can be left on the tables for someone else to enjoy.

The idea is a simple one: have extra, share it. Need some, take it.

It's a neighbour-to-neighbour way to make sure more of this year's local harvest ends up on a table instead of going to waste.

The Ontario Clean Water Agency will conduct routine flushing of Temagami’s municipal water system, with revised dates of September 21 to 25 for Temagami South and September 28 to October 2 for Temagami North.

Residents may experience temporary water discolouration, rust or sediment, and reduced water pressure during the work. Once flushing is complete, run a cold-water tap with the aerator removed until the water runs clear.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
