Later this month, art lovers will have a chance to spend a fall weekend exploring the work of artists around the Englehart area, right where much of that work is created.

The Englehart Area Artists Open Door Studio Tour takes place Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Rather than bringing everyone together in one location, the event invites visitors to travel from stop to stop on a free, self-guided tour, with local artists opening their homes and studios to showcase their artwork and handmade goods.

It's also an opportunity to meet the people behind the work, see some of the spaces where they create and discover local artists you may not have encountered before.

The tour is free and open to everyone, and visitors can explore as many or as few stops as they like.

A brochure containing the participating artists and studio locations will be released closer to the event.

The Open Door Studio Tour runs September 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Anyone looking for work, considering a career change or simply curious about opportunities in the area will have a chance to meet employers face-to-face later this month.

The Explore Your Options Job Fair takes place Thursday, September 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Horne Granite Curling Club in Temiskaming Shores.

More than 30 employers and organizations are listed to participate, representing a wide range of fields, including mining, health care, education, manufacturing, construction, social services, retail and public service.

Among them are Agnico Eagle's Upper Beaver Project, Alamos Gold's Young-Davidson Mine, Canada Revenue Agency, Georgia Pacific, GMS Mining, Temiskaming Hospital, Ontario Northland, Service Canada, Timmins Police Service, Miller Group, WB Melback Corporation and several local school boards and community organizations.

That variety could make the fair useful even for someone who isn't actively job hunting. It's an opportunity to see what kinds of employers are operating and hiring across the region, ask questions about different careers and make connections directly with organizations rather than simply submitting an application online.

Those empty bottles and cans sitting around the house can once again be put to work helping animals in need.

Northern Animals Rescue and Sanctuary has restarted its bottle drive fundraiser, with money raised going toward the care of animals at the rescue.

Supporters can drop off empty alcohol beverage containers at the back of the rescue's building at any time.

And if you've been collecting empties but don't have a way to drop them off, the rescue is adding another option. Volunteers will be making pickups once a month for people who ask to be added to the pickup list.

Anyone interested in arranging a pickup can send Northern Animals Rescue and Sanctuary a message.

It's an easy way to clear out the empties while turning something you might otherwise return yourself into a small donation for animals that need it.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Residents can get one-on-one assistance and learn more about using their devices. To book a session or get more information, call 705-647-4215.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.
