Sept 29th

  • Write Your Story Workshop | Beginner writers can explore personal essay writing with author Teresa Allaire at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop includes writing exercises designed to spark creativity and help participants find their own voice. Registration is $35 plus tax.

Sept 30th

  • Every Child Matters Walk | Join Keepers of the Circle at 9:30 a.m. at 121 Scott Street in New Liskeard for a walk to the waterfront honouring residential school children, survivors, families and communities. Wear an orange shirt. No registration is required.

  • Roast Pork Loin Supper - McGarry Legion Branch 38 | September 30 | Doors open 4:30 PM | Enjoy pork loin, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, coleslaw, dinner roll and lemon squares. $15 per plate; $7 for children 12 and under. Cash bar. Takeout available by calling Wendy at 705-668-0454.

  • Temiskaming Foundation Grant Deadline | Local organizations have until September 30 to apply for fall community grants through the Community Fund, For Kids Sake Fund, Englehart & Area Fund and Historic Cobalt Legacy Fund. Applications and funding details are available online.

Oct 2nd

  • Give Back Dinner | Kirkland Lake Legion Branch 87 is serving pulled pork, coleslaw, baked beans and dessert from 5 to 7 p.m. Veterans and seniors 60+ eat free and all others pay $5. Non-perishable food donations will be collected for the food bank. No takeout available.

  • Cobalt Legion Monthly Raffle | Cobalt Legion Branch 44 holds draw eight of its 12 monthly centennial raffles at 6 p.m. Only 100 tickets are sold at $5 each. The $200 prize includes $100 cash, $25 in Legion merchandise and $75 in local business gift cards.

  • Cobalt Legion 100th Anniversary Open House | Cobalt Legion Branch 44 celebrates 100 years with a Friday Night Social and open house from 3 to 9 p.m. Enjoy complimentary appetizers and cake, prizes and special happy hour pricing from 6 to 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

  • Cobalt Legion 100th Anniversary Gala | Cobalt Legion Branch 44 celebrates a century with a gala at the Cobalt Train Station. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m., dancing and live entertainment by the Whiskey River & Blues Band. Tickets are $75 and include an end-of-evening shuttle.

  • Cobalt Legion 100th Anniversary Fireworks | Celebrate Cobalt Legion Branch 44’s 100th anniversary with a fireworks display over Cobalt Lake at 9 p.m. The show is sponsored and organized by the North Cobalt Flea Market and Cobalt Fire Department.

  • Community Garage Sale | Clear out some clutter or hunt for a bargain at the Cobalt Public Library’s community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are $10 to rent, with sellers responsible for their items and anything left unsold. Space is limited.

  • Ride Into Fall | Elk Lake Wilderness Resort hosts a guided ATV/SXS ride followed by a warm meal, campfire and live music by Jayden Martin. Cost is $35 per person and includes the meal. An OFATV trail permit is required, with day passes available.

  • Karaoke Competition | Musical Mayhem hosts its semi-annual karaoke competition at The Fed Downtown in Kirkland Lake starting at 8 p.m. Singers compete for a $500 first-place prize, with cash prizes for second and third. Entry is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Oct 6th

  • Seniors Active Living Fair | Seniors can enjoy live entertainment, guest speakers, more than 15 exhibitors and a free lunch at Northern College’s Haileybury Campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is required by September 30. Free transportation is available.

Every Child Matters Walk

Keepers of the Circle is inviting the community to walk together on Wednesday, September 30 in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Every Child Matters Walk will honour the children, survivors, families and communities impacted by the residential school system.

Participants will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Keepers of the Circle, 121 Scott Street in New Liskeard, before walking together to the New Liskeard Waterfront.

There is no registration required. Participants are encouraged to wear an orange shirt and join the walk in remembrance, reflection and support.

Cubs Take Two of Three

It was a busy weekend at the Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena as the New Liskeard Cubs played three games against the Thunder Bay Kings, picking up two wins before spending some extra time with young fans on Monday.

The Cubs opened the weekend Friday night with a close 5-4 loss before bouncing back Saturday with a convincing 6-2 victory. Chase Koostachin was named the Goldbelt Player of the Game after scoring a hat trick, while Evan Rowe earned Agrégat Hardest Worker honours.

The Cubs finished the weekend Sunday morning with another win, defeating Thunder Bay 4-2. Kyle Cloutier was named Goldbelt Player of the Game, with Benjamin Boissonneault recognized as the Agrégat Hardest Worker.

Christmas Market Seeks Vendors

Christmas makers and artisans can now apply for the second annual Christmas Market at the Cobalt Train Station, returning for two evenings this November.

This year’s market runs Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 from 4 to 9 p.m.

The Friday evening will be part of the Cobalt Shines initiative, bringing local retailers and the community together for the holiday season.

Organizers expect more than 1,000 attendees, giving local makers an opportunity to showcase their work inside the historic train station.

The vendor fee is $50 per table. Applications will be reviewed by a committee, with submissions closing October 17 and approved vendors notified October 20.

😷 COVID-19 Outbreak at Northdale Manor

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Northdale Manor, and visitors are being asked to take precautions to help protect residents and staff.

Visitors should wear a mask and sanitize their hands, and anyone feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms should not visit. Northdale Manor is also asking people to limit or postpone non-essential visits while the outbreak continues.

🚱 Boil Water Advisory in Effect

A boil water advisory is in effect immediately for the entire Town of Englehart following a continuous low-pressure incident. The advisory also includes connections to the Englehart Drinking Water System in Evanturel, Charlton and Dack and Chamberlain.

Residents should boil tap water at a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth or making ice. Residents are also asked to conserve water where possible until further notice.

💰 Community Grant Deadline Approaching

The Temiskaming Foundation is accepting applications for its fall community grants until September 30.

Funding is available through the Community Fund, For Kids Sake Fund, Englehart & Area Fund and Historic Cobalt Legacy Fund. Organizations interested in applying can review eligibility requirements and application details on the Temiskaming Foundation website.

🎨 Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is holding an Appreciate Autumn Colouring Contest for children ages 3 to 12 from September 19 to October 17.

Children can compete in three age categories: 3–5, 6–8 and 9–12, with a prize for the first-place winner in each group. Colouring pages are available at the library's Reference Desk.

💧 Temagami Water System Flushing

The Ontario Clean Water Agency will conduct routine flushing of Temagami’s municipal water system, with revised dates of September 21 to 25 for Temagami South and September 28 to October 2 for Temagami North.

Residents may experience temporary water discolouration, rust or sediment, and reduced water pressure during the work. Once flushing is complete, run a cold-water tap with the aerator removed until the water runs clear.
