Families looking for an inexpensive outing this long weekend can add mini putt to the list.

The Snack Shack & Mini Putt is offering $2 mini putt for kids all weekend, along with a $10 food special featuring a Nathan's Famous hot dog and fresh-cut fries. Tax is included in the combo price.

The Snack Shack will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the long weekend, giving families plenty of time to stop in for a round, something to eat or both.

The specials are available all weekend.

Apple pie season is coming, and the Earlton Lions Club is getting ready to make 150 of them.

The club is now taking pre-orders for its homemade apple pies at $18 each, with the pies being prepared during the week of September 22.

Only 150 pies will be available, so anyone interested is encouraged to place their order early. Customers can leave their name and phone number when ordering, and the Lions Club will contact them once their pies are ready.

Payment can be made when the pies are picked up at Coeur du Village in Earlton.

The fundraiser is another way to support the Earlton Lions while taking care of dessert at the same time.

For more than a century, September in Englehart has meant it's time for the Fall Fair.

The Englehart & District Agricultural Society's 117th Annual Fall Fair takes over the Englehart Arena from September 10 to 12, bringing together three days of exhibits, animals, food, music, competition and some old-fashioned fair traditions.

And there is a lot packed into those three days.

The fair officially opens Thursday evening with an opening ceremony featuring Dan Woods, followed by something that has never happened in the fair's 117-year history: the judging of its first-ever mascot contest. Square dancers, nail driving and log sawing will also help get the weekend underway.

Friday brings the animals into the picture, with a poultry and small animal show, while families can enjoy inflatables, wagon rides and entertainment throughout the day. The traditional Harvest Supper will be served Friday evening, followed by a full night of live music and an old-fashioned barn dance.

Saturday starts early with a hearty farmers' breakfast before one of the weekend's biggest traditions takes to the streets. The Fall Fair Parade leaves the Englehart Museum at 10 a.m.

Back at the fairgrounds, Saturday includes the goat and sheep show, antique car display, baby show, wagon rides, inflatables and live entertainment throughout the day.

Music is also a big part of this year's fair. Performers over the three days include Dan Woods, Jayden Martin, Country Attitude, Elaine Mills & Friends, Off the Beaten Track, Coda, Fred Smith, Awesome Possum, Kris P. Cashless, Faith Hope and GM Blacktop.

For the Englehart & District Agricultural Society, however, the Fall Fair is about more than filling a weekend with activities. It's a tradition that has now lasted 117 years, bringing generations of families together to show what they've grown and raised, compete, volunteer, eat together and catch up with neighbours.

Temiskaming Transit will operate weekend service from Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7 for the Labour Day weekend. On those days, the last bus will leave Walmart at 9:20 p.m. and end in Cobalt at 10 p.m.

Regular service will operate on Friday, September 4 and resume on Tuesday, September

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is collecting gently used, complete puzzles from August 31 to September 19 for an upcoming community Puzzle Exchange. For every accepted puzzle, donors will receive one voucher, with a limit of five puzzles per household.

Puzzle Swap Day is Saturday, September 26, with voucher holders choosing puzzles from noon to 2 p.m. The exchange opens to everyone from 2 to 3 p.m., when remaining puzzles can be picked up without a voucher.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
