Thordon's Local Plans Take Shape

Pic Credit: Thordon Bearings
Thordon Bearings has purchased five acres of land in Temiskaming Shores, but plans for a new warehouse and small manufacturing facility will depend on the success of a proposed hydro turbine demonstration project.
The property is located on the west side of Hawn Drive in the Dymond Industrial Park.
According to James Franks, the City's Economic Development Officer, the facility would primarily serve as a warehouse for Thordon Bearings, with a smaller manufacturing operation for Thordon Energy.
The project could eventually create between two and ten jobs. Early projections called for a building between 10,000 and 20,000 square feet, although the final size will depend on demand for the company's products.
But before construction begins, Thordon has another important step to complete.
The company is conducting a feasibility study to determine whether a demonstration hydro turbine at Pete's Dam would be financially viable.
If the project moves forward, Thordon plans to partner with Timiskaming First Nation to operate the site, with revenues supporting the First Nation.
The proposed partnership would also help introduce the turbines to other First Nations, particularly remote communities looking to reduce their dependence on diesel-generated electricity.
The demonstration project would allow Thordon to assess the technology's potential before determining the scale of its future operations in Temiskaming Shores.
Franks says the proposed facility is still several years away, with its size and employment opportunities dependent on how the project develops.
For now, the land purchase is a concrete first step. Whether it grows into a larger local operation will depend on what the company learns from its demonstration project and the demand that follows.

Englehart Boil Water Advisory Lifted

Pic Credit: Town of Englehart
Residents served by the Town of Englehart's drinking water system can once again drink their tap water without boiling it.
The Ontario Clean Water Agency confirmed Thursday, October 22, that the advisory issued October 15 has been lifted after water samples showed the system is safe for drinking.
Before using the water, residents are advised to run cold water taps and drinking fountains for 10 minutes. Water softeners should be put through a regeneration cycle, and hot water tanks set below 45°C should be drained and refilled.
Residents in Evanturel connected to the Englehart water system should check with the Township of Evanturel for confirmation that the advisory has also been lifted in their area.
For more information, contact the Town of Englehart at 705-544-2244 or the Northeast Public Health Unit at 1-877-442-1212.
