Grab three friends and hit the sand.

As part of Hudson Township's Day in the Park, an 8-team beach volleyball tournament will take place on Saturday, August 1, at Pike Lake Park.

Games begin at 10 a.m., with teams made up of four players. All participants must be 12 years of age or older.

With only eight team spots available, organizers encourage interested players to register early. Teams should include players' names, ages and a team name when signing up.

Whether you're playing for bragging rights or just looking for a fun day at the beach, the tournament promises plenty of friendly competition as part of the community celebration.

Most nine-year-olds don't ask to start a business.

Rene Denomme did.

"He wanted to cut lawns," his grandmother Peggy says. "But he's too small, and we already have a great group of young lawn-cutting entrepreneurs here in Earlton."

So Rene came up with another idea.

He asked if he could start selling lemonade.

His 13-year-old brother, Caleb Denomme, quickly joined the business, adding different flavours and specialty drinks to the menu. Today, Caleb handles the money while Rene makes the drinks and chats with customers.

"The best part is meeting people and serving our friends," the boys say.

But what makes Denomme Lemonade special isn't just what's on the menu.

When Peggy agreed to let Rene start the business, she had one condition. Part of the money they earn would be donated to the Earlton Recreation Committee.

For Rene, it was an easy decision.

"Rene loves Earlton and everything about it," Peggy says. "He likes being part of the community. If there's a tree to plant or garbage to pick up, he'll help."

She already sees something special in her grandson.

"I could see Rene running for mayor one day."

The boys are saving their earnings until the end of the summer to see how much they've made, but for Rene, the business has always been about more than money. It's about meeting people, serving the community he loves and giving something back.

If you'd like to encourage two young entrepreneurs this summer, you can find Denomme Lemonade at Earlton Park this Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Northern College alumni who sign up for Alumni Perks by September 1, 2026 will be entered for a chance to win a Sleeping with the Wolves getaway at Cedar Meadows in Timmins.

The prize includes a one-night stay in the Sleeping with the Wolves cabin and a $150 gift card for Cedar Meadows Steakhouse. Alumni can register through the Northern College Alumni Perks program before the deadline.

A precautionary boil water advisory will be in effect for Englehart beginning Monday, July 20, while work is completed at the Town's Water Treatment Plant.

Residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth or making ice. The advisory will remain in effect until the Town of Englehart and Northeastern Public Health announce it has been lifted.

Registration is now open for the 2026 Baby Contest, taking place Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 AM on the Entertainment Stage inside the Horne Granite Curling Club.

The contest is open to babies from newborn to 12 months old, born between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026. Registration is required by August 31, with prizes awarded at the end of the contest.
