Three mornings a week, Jesse and Cole walk you through the latest local stories. Listen on your drive, while running errands, at the gym, walking the dog or wherever your day takes you.

New episodes arrive Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings on Spotify and soon on Apple.

One heads-up: Jesse and Cole are AI-generated hosts. The voices aren’t real, but the local stories they’re talking about are.

Can Temiskaming Make This Work?

What if an idea developed right here in Temiskaming Shores could eventually reach people across Canada?

That's what Kyle Chester hopes to accomplish with Start The Barter, the new online marketplace where people can exchange goods and services without necessarily spending money.

Chester has experimented with building apps before, but he says Start The Barter is the project he's taken the furthest.

And technology is changing what's possible.

With modern development tools, including AI-assisted coding, individuals can now build applications that once might have required a team of programmers.

But for Chester, the technology isn't the most important part.

"I think one of the core themes is, you will become successful just by helping other people," he said.

A Promising Start

When Tri Town Today first spoke with Chester, Start The Barter had been operating for about two weeks.

He reported more than 1,000 views, with most of that activity coming during the previous seven days.

Seventeen people had signed up.

It's an encouraging beginning, but Chester knows the real opportunity comes when more people start listing things.

Imagine 100 local residents each posting one item. Now imagine 1,000.

Suddenly, there's a growing collection of goods and services available for people to explore and potentially trade.

Chester hopes people will eventually make checking Start The Barter part of their regular routine, just to see what's new.

And while his ambitions extend well beyond Temiskaming, this is where it all begins.

He's built the marketplace. Whether it grows depends on what the rest of us put into it.

Visit StartTheBarter.com, create a free account and consider posting one thing someone else might need.

This is the third article in our Tri Town Today series exploring Start The Barter. Next, we'll share what happens when Tri Town Today puts the platform to the test with a real barter.

Mining Showcase Applications Open

Mining is one of those industries where a handshake at the right convention can turn into a contract. For Northern Ontario supply companies, that convention is PDAC, and the Northern Ontario Mining Showcase just opened its exhibitor applications for 2027.

The showcase puts northern companies in front of the global mining world. Applications opened October 9, and the deadline is November 8, 2026.

Getting in takes three steps. First, a questionnaire checks whether a company meets the five base criteria: operations in Northern Ontario, at least a quarter of its workforce living and working here, fewer than 500 employees worldwide, and a real connection to supplying the mining industry, including the potential to sell beyond the region.

Then the NOMS review committee decides. Approved companies get an email with a direct link to finalize registration and payment.

James Franks, the City of Temiskaming Shores' economic development officer, is spreading the word locally and asking folks to pass it along to any company that might want a booth.

Know a northern supply company that belongs on that stage? The clock runs out November 8.

Details and applications: northernontariomining.com/pdac/.
