A new exhibition coming to the Cobalt Mining Museum will explore a lesser-known part of Cobalt’s mining history and its connection to the development of water protection in Canada.

Cobalt Waterways and the Cobalt Water Act of 1917, curated by Felicity Buckell, will examine how Cobalt’s silver boom affected local waterways and eventually contributed to the creation of one of Canada’s early environmental protection laws.

The bilingual exhibition will look beyond the mining boom itself to explore the relationship between industry, the community and the natural environment, including how decisions made more than a century ago continue to be relevant today.

Funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the project is being developed in partnership with Agnico Eagle Mines Limited and Le Centre culturel ARTEM.

The exhibition is expected to open at the Cobalt Mining Museum in spring 2027 before travelling to the Timmins Museum National Exhibition Centre and the Musée Fossilarium in Notre-Dame-du-Nord.

There will also be a local community component. Residents will be invited to contribute photographs, memories and stories connected to Cobalt’s waterways, helping add personal experiences to the historical record.

Local growers, bakers, makers and creators have two opportunities to take part in Harvest to Home Vendor Appreciation Days in Englehart this summer.

The special markets will be held Saturday, August 22 and Saturday, September 5, with vendor spaces available for just $15 per market, including a table and chair.

Vendors can register for one date or take part in both, making it an affordable opportunity to showcase locally grown, baked or handmade products and connect with shoppers in the community.

Vendors who have already paid the regular market fee will be contacted directly.

The Foire Gourmande returns to Ville-Marie from August 14 to 16, celebrating local food and producers from Témiscamingue, Abitibi, Northeastern Ontario and across Quebec.

The 24th edition features tastings, local food and artisan vendors, chef demonstrations, family activities and free live entertainment. Admission to the festival and shows is free.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.

The evening is a chance to celebrate the volunteers, teamwork and community effort that helped make the Legion's Centennial celebrations possible. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by commenting on the original Facebook post.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 227 is looking for vendors for its Community Garage Sale on August 15 and 16, with table rentals available for $20.

Vendors must bring their own table, and all table rental proceeds support the Legion. To reserve a space, contact June at 705-498-3879.

The Armstrong Township Public Library is hosting Magnet Fishing Week from August 10 to 15, inviting visitors to try their luck at catching magnetic fish for a chance to win prizes.

The free activity is open throughout the week at the library and is part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations.
