Take Back Your Sunday Night

Pic Credit: NorthSync
Some business owners do their bookkeeping at the kitchen table on a Sunday night. NorthSync wants to take that night back.
The new bookkeeping service is holding its grand opening open house Thursday, October 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce in New Liskeard.
There’s also a pretty good reason for local business owners to stop by. One person who enters the draw will win a full year of free bookkeeping from NorthSync.
No purchase is necessary. Just stop in, say hello, enter the draw and get a chance to learn more about the new local business and the people behind it.
Thursday, Oct. 15 | 4–6 p.m. | Chamber of Commerce, New Liskeard

Cobalt Refinery Gears Up

Pic Credit: Electra Battery Materials Corporation
There is a particular kind of hire that tells you more than any press release. When a construction project brings in a builder, it is still being built. When it brings in an operator, it is getting ready to run.
Electra Battery Materials just named Garzon Duenas general manager of its cobalt refinery in Temiskaming Shores, effective October 5. His title carries a telling second half: Commissioning Leader. Duenas has spent more than 30 years starting up and running mineral refineries in Canada and internationally, working with cobalt, nickel, copper and specialty chemicals.
The timeline the company laid out runs like this. Select commissioning activities are targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, mechanical completion in the second quarter of 2027, full commissioning and ramp-up in the third quarter, and commercial production in the fourth. Construction, the company says, remains on budget. CEO Trent Mell said they are now "building the team and operating systems needed to commission the refinery and bring it into production safely and reliably."
If it gets there, the Temiskaming Shores plant would be the first source of battery-grade cobalt sulphate in North America, the refined material that goes into electric vehicle batteries, in a market where nearly all of that refining happens in China.
For the Tri-Towns, the part to watch is what "building the team" turns into over the coming months. A refinery shifting from construction to operations starts hiring the people who will run it. Those postings are worth keeping an eye on.
