Last week, I shared the story of how an unexpected half-hour conversation with Chris Gallagher, founder of Northern Hospice Care, introduced me to a vision that's quietly been growing in our region.

The vision isn't a large healthcare facility.

It's a home.

As the committee researched hospices across Ontario, they discovered something interesting.

Many communities with populations similar to ours aren't building large healthcare facilities. Instead, they're creating welcoming homes where people can spend their final days surrounded by family in a comfortable, peaceful setting.

That's the vision Northern Hospice Care has for our area.

The committee has been looking at homes with four or five bedrooms. A property with enough room to create a welcoming environment, provide storage, accommodate accessible outdoor spaces and make it easy for families to visit.

Not hidden away in the country.

Not in the middle of a busy commercial area.

Just a place that feels... like home.

Chris told me they've spent the past two years researching what works in other communities. They've toured hospices, spoken with experienced organizations and studied what has worked in communities similar to ours.

They aren't trying to reinvent the wheel.

They're trying to learn from people who have already built something meaningful.

And the committee hasn't even decided where the hospice should be.

That's intentional.

Rather than choosing a location first, they're focused on finding the right location. Somewhere that is accessible for families, practical to operate and affordable enough that more resources can go toward caring for patients instead of maintaining an oversized building.

Maybe that's why the committee keeps coming back to the idea of a home.

Not because it's smaller.

But because, at a time when families need comfort the most, home is exactly what they're hoping to create.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is putting a new spin on its annual spelling bee by turning it into a team competition.

Instead of competing individually, students entering Grade 6 this September are invited to form teams of three for the Grade Five Teams of Three Spelling Bee on Saturday, August 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The library has room for four teams, which will compete against one another for a pizza dinner. Every participant will also receive a participation certificate.

Organizers say the new format is designed to make the spelling bee more engaging by encouraging teamwork, fun and school spirit.

Space is limited, so families are encouraged to contact the Temiskaming Shores Public Library to register their team.

Temiskaming Transit will operate regular service on Friday, July 31, and Tuesday, August 4, with weekend service in effect on August 1, 2 and 3.

On the weekend service days, the last bus leaves Walmart at 9:20 p.m. and arrives in Cobalt at 10 p.m.

Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen is offering pony rides on Saturday Aug1st, Sunday closed, Monday Aug 3rd from 12 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. during the long weekend.

For $7, children receive a pony ride and an animal feed cone for the petting farm. The farm is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and closed Sunday.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library is inviting children ages 3 to 12 to take part in its TD Summer Reading Club Colouring Contest.

The contest runs from July 22 to August 12, with first-place prizes awarded in each age category. Pick up a colouring sheet at the library and submit your entry before the deadline.

The Northern Ontario Art Association's 69th Annual Juried Exhibition is on display at the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake from July 17 to August 15.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission to the reception is a coin donation at the door.

Northern College alumni who sign up for Alumni Perks by September 1, 2026 will be entered for a chance to win a Sleeping with the Wolves getaway at Cedar Meadows in Timmins.

The prize includes a one-night stay in the Sleeping with the Wolves cabin and a $150 gift card for Cedar Meadows Steakhouse. Alumni can register through the Northern College Alumni Perks program before the deadline.
