In 1876, hundreds of people from across the region gathered at what is now the Obadjiwan-Fort-Témiscamingue National Historic Site near Ville-Marie.

It was an important cultural and spiritual gathering that brought together Anishinaabeg, French Canadians and Britons. The moment was captured in one of the oldest known photographs of the Temiskaming region, preserving an image of a place that had long served as a meeting point for different peoples and cultures.

Now, 150 years later, people will gather there again.

Maamawiinowag 150: Where Our Stories Meet will take place Saturday, August 22 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, commemorating the Great Gathering of Obadjiwan of 1876 and the history that connects communities throughout the region.

The afternoon will include the unveiling of the 1876 Maamawiinowag commemorative monument and plaque, along with historical presentations telling the story of the original gathering.

Visitors will also experience music, dance and traditional clothing representing Anishinaabe, French-Canadian and Scottish cultures, along with food tastings inspired by each tradition.

The name Maamawiinowag means "to gather in great numbers," making it especially fitting as people return to the historic site 150 years later to remember a gathering that became part of Temiskaming's shared history.

The event takes place at the Obadjiwan-Fort-Témiscamingue National Historic Site and is free to attend.

There’s another reason to get outside and explore the area over the next two weeks with the Get Active in Temiskaming Summer Challenge, running August 17 to 30.

This week’s challenge takes participants through New Liskeard and Dymond from August 17 to 23. Follow one of the posted routes and watch for colourful Get Active in Temiskaming signs along the way. When you find one, snap a selfie and share it on social media using #getactiveintemiskaming for a chance to win a Get Active hoodie. Wearing Get Active gear in your photo earns a bonus entry.

The first winner will be drawn the evening of August 23. The challenge then moves to Haileybury and Cobalt from August 24 to 30, with another winner drawn August 30.

Whether you walk, run or simply head out to explore, the idea is to get moving and have a little fun discovering the signs along the way.

CJTT 104.5 FM is giving away $1,000 in groceries and $500 in gas, with prizes provided by Yves’ Prime Cut Meats, Breault Family Farm, Leis Landscaping Yard & Country Store and Earlton Timber Mart.

Enter by filling out a ballot at participating businesses for a chance to win the grand prize. Several businesses are also offering additional door prizes, including gift cards, a barbecue, patio chairs, an area rug and more.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library offers Digital Literacy Sessions on Thursdays by appointment for anyone looking for help using a smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Residents can get one-on-one assistance and learn more about using their devices. To book a session or get more information, call 705-647-4215.

Anyone interested in joining a Washer League is invited to an information meeting at Coeur du Village in Earlton on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will discuss plans for the league, and everyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.

The New Liskeard Lions Club is selling tickets for its Butchers Raffle, with proceeds supporting Northern Hospice Care.

Tickets are $10 for a chance to win the grand prize of a hind quarter of beef from Yves Prime Cuts with a freezer from The Brick, or the second prize of a side of pork from Yves Prime Cuts. Tickets will be available at at Walmart on August 27.

The Cobalt Silver Nugget Race takes place Sunday, August 23 at 2 p.m. at Tina’s Trail in Cobalt, and there’s still time to get your nugget in the race.

Tickets are $10, with a $1,500 jackpot up for grabs. Each ticket represents one silver nugget, with 10 heats leading to a final race to determine the winner based on how far the nugget rolls. Tickets are available at the Cobalt Mining Museum.

The Branch 54 Haileybury Legion is inviting everyone who volunteered during its 100th anniversary celebrations to a special appreciation gathering at The Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street in Cobalt, on Sunday, August 30 at 6 p.m.

The evening is a chance to celebrate the volunteers, teamwork and community effort that helped make the Legion's Centennial celebrations possible. Volunteers are asked to RSVP by commenting on the original Facebook post.
