Local Groups Across Temiskaming Benefit from Community Foundation Funding

A number of local groups across the Temiskaming region are receiving support through community-based funding, highlighting the quiet but important role the Temiskaming Foundation plays in the area.

The Foundation, based in New Liskeard, works by pooling donations and redistributing them through grants to organizations that improve quality of life across the district. From youth programs and recreation to arts, culture, and community services, the goal is simple: help local groups do more for the people they serve.

A recent post shared by the Foundation gives a snapshot of where that support is going.

Several funds operate under the Foundation, each focused on specific communities or priorities.

Through the For Kids Sake Fund, support is directed toward youth-focused programming and activities. Local recipients include the Elk Lake Fun Federation, James Township Public Library, Riverside Farmers Market, Riverside Jiu Jitsu, St. James Anglican Church, Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club, Temiskaming Thunder, and the Town of Englehart.

The Community Fund casts a wider net, helping organizations across Temiskaming with projects tied to recreation, culture, education, and community services. Groups supported include the Armstrong Public Library, the City of Temiskaming Shores, Classic Theatre Cobalt, Cobalt Mining Museum, Coleman Fire Department, Elk Lake Fun Federation, Haileybury Curling Club, Haileybury Heritage Museum, McGarry Public Library, New Liskeard BIA, Royal Canadian Legion branches in Elk Lake and New Liskeard, and Small Pond Entertainers.

In central Temiskaming, the Englehart and Area Fund continues to support projects tied to that region, including the Municipality of Charlton and Dack and the Town of Englehart.

Further north, the Kirkland Lake and Area Fund focuses on initiatives that benefit that community and surrounding area, including the Kirkland Lake Aquatic Club and Riverside Jiu Jitsu.

Meanwhile, the Historic Cobalt Legacy Fund remains dedicated to preserving and enhancing Cobalt’s heritage and cultural life, with support going to the Royal Canadian Legion Cobalt Branch.

Each of these funds reflects a different piece of the region, but they all serve the same purpose. The Foundation provides grants, often up to a few thousand dollars, to help local organizations run programs, upgrade equipment, or launch new initiatives that benefit residents.

Behind the list of names is a broader picture of how community support works in a smaller region. Many of these organizations rely on volunteers, donations, and partnerships to operate. Funding like this helps bridge the gap between ideas and action.

From libraries and museums to sports clubs and cultural groups, the impact tends to show up in everyday ways. A program runs that otherwise might not. A facility gets improved. A community event continues.

For residents, it is a reminder that much of what makes the Tri Town and surrounding areas feel connected comes from local effort backed by local support.

More information about funding programs, eligibility, and how to apply or donate can be found at The Temiskaming Foundation.

Local Butcher “Pico” Set to Retire After 17 Years at Yves’ Prime Cut Meat

After nearly two decades behind the counter, a familiar face at Yves' Prime Cut Meats is getting ready to hang up his apron.

Pierre “Pico,” who has been part of the shop since it first opened in 2009, is retiring after 17 years of service to the community. Known for his craftsmanship and steady presence, Pico has played a key role in shaping the business and mentoring others along the way.

The shop, a local butcher and deli in New Liskeard, has built its reputation on quality products and personal service over the years. Pico has been a big part of that experience for many customers, often recognized not just for his work, but for the relationships he built with people coming through the door.

Owners are inviting the community to stop in this week to say goodbye and thank him for his years of dedication. His final day is set for Wednesday, April 29.

For many in the area, it marks the end of an era at one of Temiskaming’s well-known local businesses, and a chance to show appreciation for someone who has quietly served the community for years.

Latchford Invites Residents to Share Local Views in Photography Contest

Pic Credit: Town of Latchford

The Town of Latchford is calling on residents and visitors to capture what makes the community special through a new photography contest.

The initiative invites people to submit original photos taken within Latchford that highlight the area’s natural beauty, waterfront, changing seasons, landmarks, and everyday life. Selected images may be featured on the town’s new website, along with use on social media and other promotional materials.

Participants are asked to submit high quality images in JPEG format, with a minimum resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. Photos must be clear, free of watermarks or text, and taken by the person submitting them.

Entries can be dropped off in person at the Municipal Office using a USB stick or submitted online by sending a download link through services such as Google Drive or Dropbox. For security reasons, direct email attachments are not accepted.

All submissions must be received by May 13, 2026.

The contest offers a chance for the community to play a role in how Latchford is presented online, while showcasing the places and moments that define the town through the eyes of those who know it best.

Game Coming Soon!

Be On The Look Out!

You’re going to start seeing this guy around.

We call him the Tri Town Guide.

We’re going to be launching a simple game on Facebook called Find the Guide. On certain days we’ll post a photo somewhere around the Tri Town. The Guide will be in that photo. Your job will be to figure out where it is.

You’ll drop your guess in the comment, and every correct answer will count as an entry. We’ll draw a winner each week and feature them in the newsletter. Local businesses will be part of it too, so prizes will come from right here in the community.

It’s meant to be simple. Something quick, something fun, something that makes you look at the tri town area a little differently.

We’re not launching it just yet. We want to build this up properly first. But it’s coming soon.

So for now, just keep an eye out.

Because once the Guide starts showing up, you’ll know it’s time to play.
