The Deep Water Project Brings Local History to the Stage

The Deep Water Project at the Classic Theatre felt like more than just a concert Friday night.

The performance blended music, narration, and storytelling to explore pieces of the Temiskaming region’s history through a collection of original songs.

From Indigenous teachings and voyageurs to the silver rush and the Great Fire of 1922, the show moved through different moments that helped shape this area.

Narration by David Laronde helped tie the stories together throughout the evening, while musicians like Peter Cliche added another layer to the performance with fiddle, dobro, and other instruments that gave each song its own personality.

One of the standout moments of the night was Grandfathers Teachings — The spiritual roots of N’Daki Menan.

Another was The Villain in the Wind performed by Kevin Sopchyshyn, which focused on the destruction caused by the Great Fire of 1922.

Hearing that parts of the area were once covered in six inches of ash after the fire was one of those small historical details that seemed to catch people off guard.

The show also touched on local lore, including stories connected to the “Little People,” adding another layer to the history of the region.

What stood out most throughout the night was how much history exists here that many people simply do not know about.

The Deep Water Project only scratches the surface.
