Part 1 of 4 - The Boutique You Never Knew Existed

There's a boutique in Temiskaming Shores that many locals have never discovered.

It sells Canadian-designed fashion, jewellery, handbags, gifts and home décor.

Some shoppers even make a special trip just to browse.

The surprising part?

It's inside Temiskaming Hospital.

If you're picturing the Temiskaming Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop as a few greeting cards and a shelf of magazines, think again.

Walk through the doors and you'll find racks of clothing, beautiful jewellery, handbags, watches, stationery, sweet treats and gift ideas that change throughout the year.

It's the kind of place that invites you to slow down, browse and see what's new. And people do.

Longtime Auxiliary volunteer Diane Vachon, who oversees the Gift Shop's day-to-day operations says, "... some customers come with no hospital appointment at all. They simply enjoy shopping there. Others have travelled from Quebec after discovering the boutique on Facebook. "

There's another surprise waiting at the checkout.

Spend more than $100 and the Gift Shop will even cover your hospital parking, making it easy to take your time and browse.

Of course, the shop continues to be a welcome stop for patients, visitors and families looking for a thoughtful gift, a snack, a greeting card or simply something to brighten someone's day.

But what really makes this boutique different isn't something you'll find on the shelves.

Behind every display is a dedicated team of local volunteers. Every purchase helps support healthcare in our community, turning an afternoon of shopping into something that reaches far beyond the front doors of the hospital.

Maybe it's time Temiskaming Shores' best-kept shopping secret wasn't such a secret anymore.

Flag Football Camp

Looking for a way to keep your young athlete active this summer? The Temiskaming Bisons are teaming up with Zubyck SkillZ to offer a week-long Flag Football Summer Camp, with registration still open before camp begins on July 13.

Designed for players looking to build confidence and improve their game, the camp will introduce participants to every aspect of flag football. Athletes will rotate through a variety of offensive and defensive positions while developing essential skills such as throwing, catching, route running, flag pulling, and understanding team strategy.

Whether participants are trying flag football for the first time or looking to sharpen their skills for the upcoming season, organizers say the camp will provide a fun, supportive environment focused on learning, teamwork, and player development.

With flag football continuing to grow in popularity across Canada, camps like this give local athletes the opportunity to develop fundamental skills while staying active over the summer.

Registration remains open, but with camp starting July 13, interested families are encouraged to register soon.

Show Off Your Green Thumb

From colourful flower planters to backyard vegetable gardens, the Englehart & District Horticultural Society is once again inviting local gardeners to put their growing skills to the test.

Registration is now open for both the 2026 Youth Garden Competition and the Best Planter Competition, with organizers encouraging residents to sign up before the July 17 deadline.

The Youth Garden Competition is open to students from Kindergarten through high school who have grown and cared for their own garden within 20 kilometres of Englehart. The Best Planter Competition welcomes creative container gardens that brighten homes and neighbourhoods throughout the community.

Judging will begin in early August, with judges contacting participants beforehand to arrange a visit. Winners will be announced in September, with prizes presented at a later date.

To register, simply provide your name, address, phone number, and the location of your garden or planter by commenting on the Horticultural Society's Facebook post or by texting 705-622-3006.

Whether you've grown prize-winning tomatoes, colourful flowers, or the perfect front porch planter, this is your chance to celebrate the growing season and inspire others to get their hands in the soil.

A Free Night For Families

Pic Credit: North On Tap

Before the craft beer taps start flowing, North On Tap is setting aside an evening just for families.

The popular Family Fun Night returns to Haileybury Harbour Place on Friday, July 10, offering three hours of free activities designed to bring the community together in an alcohol-free setting.

From 5 to 8 p.m., children can enjoy inflatables, face painting by Temiskaming Art Gallery's Open Studio Libre, and fun surprises courtesy of the North Cobalt Flea Market, while families can grab dinner at the BBQ and canteen hosted by the Temiskaming Shores Scout Group and the Haileybury Firefighters Association.

The evening also includes complimentary root beer floats, generously provided by Liv n Gracie's, before everyone settles in under the pavilion for a free family movie beginning at 6 p.m. Organizers encourage guests to bring their own lawn chairs, with the movie title to be announced soon.

Proudly sponsored by Alamos Gold, Family Fun Night has become a tradition that reminds everyone North On Tap is about more than craft beer. It's also about creating memorable experiences for families and celebrating community.

Pack your lawn chairs, bring the kids, and enjoy a free summer evening on the Haileybury waterfront before the festival gets underway.
