TSSC Summer Skating School Returns This August with Two-Week Program

Pic Credits: Temiskiming Shores Skating Club
Registration is now open for the Temiskaming Shores Skating Club’s Summer Skating School, offering local skaters a chance to stay sharp and active on the ice this August.
The two-week program runs from August 4 to 14 and is designed to keep skaters engaged through a mix of on-ice sessions, off-ice training, and skill-building activities.
Week 1 (August 4–7) features a full schedule running from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM each day. Skaters in different levels will rotate through a combination of on-ice practice, off-ice conditioning, and breaks. Participants are encouraged to arrive early and come prepared with a water bottle, running shoes, appropriate off-ice clothing, and a snack.
Week 2 (August 10–14) shifts focus to on-ice sessions only and is reserved for StarSkate program participants, with shorter daily ice times depending on skill level.
While traditional “Learn to Skate” programs are not offered during the summer session, the club will run a PreStar program during Week 1. This option is available to skaters who have completed Stage 4 and up, with eligibility requiring either participation in the winter PreStar program or a minimum age of 8.
Early bird pricing is available until May 31, with registration closing July 4. Spaces are limited, and interest is expected to be high.
Out-of-town skaters will be able to register starting May 11.
More details, including full program breakdowns and registration, can be found through the club’s Uplifter page.

Notre-Dame-du-Nord to Mark Red Dress Day on May 5

The Municipality of Notre-Dame-du-Nord is encouraging residents to take part in Red Dress Day on May 5, a national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit individuals.
The day serves as both a time of remembrance and a call to action. Across Canada, Indigenous women continue to face disproportionately high rates of violence, with lasting impacts on families and communities.
In a message shared with the community, the municipality emphasized the importance of listening, learning, and supporting meaningful change. Efforts such as amplifying Indigenous voices, supporting research, and taking part in local initiatives are seen as key steps toward justice and healing.
Residents are invited to mark the day in simple but meaningful ways. Wearing red, taking time to learn more about the issue, and participating in community events are all encouraged.
Support resources are also being highlighted for those who may need them. The Hope for Wellness Helpline is available at 1-855-242-3310, the Suicide Crisis Helpline can be reached by calling or texting 988, and the National Circle of Families and Survivors is available at 1-844-413-6649.
The message from the municipality is clear. Remembering those who have been lost is important, but it is also about taking steps toward awareness, understanding, and action within the community.

The Temiskaming Shores Public Library has released its schedule for May, offering a wide range of programs, activities, and services for all ages throughout the month.
Regular programming continues with Preschool Storytime running on multiple Wednesdays, giving young children and families a chance to gather for stories and early learning. The popular Soup to Tomatoes sessions are also back on Tuesdays, offering community members a chance to connect and learn together.
Special events are planned throughout the month, including a Cinco de Mayo themed Club de Lecture, a Spring Family Storytime, and a Grade 5 Spelling Bee near the end of May. Visitors can also take part in Digital Literacy sessions by appointment, aimed at helping residents build confidence with technology.
The library is also continuing some of its unique lending programs. Residents can borrow items like a bird watching guide or even a park pass, giving access to Ontario’s provincial parks for a limited time.
Several Pay As You Please book sales are scheduled across Fridays in May, offering an opportunity to pick up books while supporting the library.
The library will be closed on Victoria Day, May 18, and regular hours remain in place for the rest of the month, with evening and weekend access available.
With a mix of educational programs, community events, and practical resources, the May schedule highlights the library’s role as a gathering place and hub for learning in Temiskaming Shores.
Electra Highlights the Role of Cobalt as Battery Demand Continues to Grow

Pic Credit: Electra Battery Materials Corporation
As demand for electric vehicles and energy storage continues to rise, a familiar name in the region is helping shed light on a key material behind the technology.
Electra Battery Materials Corporation recently shared an overview explaining why cobalt remains an important part of modern lithium ion batteries. While many people know cobalt is used in batteries, the company says its role goes much deeper than most realize.
According to Electra, cobalt helps improve thermal stability within batteries, reducing the risk of overheating and contributing to overall safety. It also plays a role in extending battery life, allowing systems to maintain performance over time and support more charge cycles.
Beyond safety and lifespan, cobalt contributes to higher energy density. That means more power can be stored in the same size battery, helping extend the range of electric vehicles and improve efficiency in other applications.
The company notes that these benefits are becoming more important as demand grows across several sectors, including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, defense, and aerospace technologies.
With its refinery operations based in Cobalt, ON, Electra continues to position itself as part of the broader battery supply chain in Northern Ontario, a region increasingly connected to the future of clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
As global demand for battery materials continues to expand, understanding the role of resources like cobalt is becoming an important part of the conversation both locally and beyond.

Game Coming Soon!
Be On The Look Out!
You’re going to start seeing this guy around.
We call him the Tri Town Guide.

We’re going to be launching a simple game on Facebook called Find the Guide. On certain days we’ll post a photo somewhere around the Tri Town. The Guide will be in that photo. Your job will be to figure out where it is.

You’ll drop your guess in the comment, and every correct answer will count as an entry. We’ll draw a winner each week and feature them in the newsletter. Local businesses will be part of it too, so prizes will come from right here in the community.
It’s meant to be simple. Something quick, something fun, something that makes you look at the tri town area a little differently.
We’re not launching it just yet. We want to build this up properly first. But it’s coming soon.
So for now, just keep an eye out.
Because once the Guide starts showing up, you’ll know it’s time to play.
