New Liskeard Coffee House Celebrating 10 Years of Local Music

A local music tradition is celebrating a major milestone this month as the New Liskeard Coffee House marks its 10th anniversary.

Founded by Steve Teal and Brian Matheson in May 2016, the Coffee House was created to give local musicians a welcoming place to meet, practice, perform, and connect with others who share a love for music.

Over the past decade, more than 500 entertainers have taken the stage, with performers travelling from communities across Northern Ontario and Western Quebec, including Timmins, North Bay, Matachewan, and Notre-Dame-du-Nord.

Organizers say one of the biggest highlights through the years has been the loyal audience that continues to return month after month to support both new and experienced musicians alike.

The Coffee House has also quietly supported many local community causes over the years, with the Coffee House Fund established in partnership with the Temiskaming Foundation to help generate funding through investments supporting community music initiatives.

The 10th anniversary celebration takes place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 70 Wellington Street North in New Liskeard. The evening will feature several performers who have been part of the Coffee House journey over the years, with music beginning at 7 pm.

Those interested in supporting the Coffee House through donations or learning more can contact organizers at [email protected]
.

For many local musicians, the Coffee House has become more than just a performance venue. It has become a place where friendships, confidence, and a stronger local music community continue to grow.

Northlander Quilt Project Bringing Community Together in New Liskeard

Pic Credit: Gem’s Sewing

As excitement continues to build around the return of the Northlander passenger train, The Community Quilting Project in New Liskeard is helping commemorate the occasion in a uniquely Northern Ontario way.

The project began through the Little Claybelt Homesteaders Museum, which wanted to create something special to recognize the train’s return. The museum partnered with Gem Sewing, co-owned by Gayle McNaughton, to help bring the idea to life.

Thirty quilt block kits were originally prepared using Ontario Northland inspired colours including yellow, blue, and white. But interest quickly exceeded expectations, with all the kits claimed within just five days and additional rows added to the quilt due to demand.

Participants have created a wide variety of designs including hearts, pinwheels, railway inspired patterns, and even an embroidered Ontario Northland themed block.

McNaughton says the quilt is about more than fabric and stitching. It is about bringing the community together around something many people across the North have been waiting years to see return.

The completed quilt is expected to be displayed at the museum throughout the summer as part of a new Ontario Northland exhibit. Organizers are also exploring the possibility of using the quilt later as part of a fundraiser supporting the museum.

McNaughton, who remembers taking the Northlander to Toronto for medical appointments as a child, says she is thrilled to see the service returning despite some concerns about the current overnight schedule.

The project has also sparked conversations about quilting workshops, train travel, and finding creative ways to connect communities across Northern Ontario once passenger service resumes.
