Loons Bring Coaching Underwater

The next time Temiskaming Northern Loons swimmers dive into the pool, they may be able to hear their coach without ever stopping at the wall.

The club is introducing the SONR Underwater Communication System, a technology that allows coaches to speak directly to swimmers while they are in the middle of a lap. Using a small bone-conduction speaker worn beneath a swimmer's cap and a handheld radio, coaches can provide instructions that swimmers can hear both above and below the water.

The idea first came to the Temiskaming Northern Loons after coaches saw a similar system being used at a swim meet in Guelph.

"It really caught our attention," the club said. "Their coach spoke very highly of the devices. After that, we started researching different options and found that the SONR system was the best fit for our club's needs."

Unlike traditional coaching, where feedback is often given after a swimmer reaches the wall, SONR allows coaches to offer corrections as they happen.

"I've already had the chance to try it in a few practices, and I've been really impressed with how clearly swimmers can hear me," said Coach Stacy. "It opens up so many opportunities to give immediate corrections, encouragement and cues without interrupting their momentum. It's a completely different level of communication."

That real-time communication is expected to help swimmers learn more quickly.

"Instead of giving feedback after a set, we can correct something right as it's happening," Stacy explained. "That helps swimmers make adjustments instantly, which can lead to faster skill development and better retention."

The technology will benefit every swimmer in the club, from its youngest members to senior athletes, although it won't be used at every practice.

"It's an incredible tool to have in our toolbox to help reinforce skills and improve technique more effectively," the club said.

For the Temiskaming Northern Loons, the project is about more than adding new equipment. Club officials say it reflects their commitment to continuing to grow and finding new ways to develop local swimmers.

The SONR Underwater Communication Project was made possible through funding from the Gordon and Greyson Zubyck Memorial Fund (One Foot Forward), which supports projects that create opportunities for young athletes in the community.

"We're incredibly grateful to One Foot Forward for supporting this project and helping bring this technology to our swimmers," the club said. "Opportunities like this make a huge difference in small clubs like ours and allow us to provide experiences and tools that might not otherwise be possible."

Tri Town Today will also be speaking with One Foot Forward to learn more about why the organization chose to invest in this technology for the Temiskaming Northern Loons. We'd also like to check back with the club in the fall to see how the SONR system is working in the pool and what impact it's having on swimmers and coaches.

If you are a coach of a team that would like to have their team scores and highlight shared with the community please reach out to [email protected] and lets connect.
