More Than a Yarn Shop: Inside The Match Factory in New Liskeard

There’s something a little different about walking into The Match Factory.

The first thing you notice is the colour.

Shelves lined with yarn in every shade imaginable. Baskets of wool. Buttons both vintage and new. Half-finished projects spread across a table where people gather to knit, crochet, spin, weave, and talk.

It feels less like a retail store and more like a place where people settle in for a while.

Located on Armstrong Street in downtown New Liskeard, The Match Factory has been part of the local fibre and crafting community for over 25 years, with current owner Kati Aitchison carrying it forward for the last four.

“When the only wool-based store in Northern Ontario was going to retire, I didn’t want to see that avenue close,” Kati shared. “I jumped in with both feet.”

That decision helped preserve something many communities no longer have: a dedicated local fibre shop built around both knowledge and community.

Kati brings more than 40 years of knitting and crochet experience to the store, along with spinning, weaving, and a deep appreciation for traditional fibre arts. But what really stands out is how much of the business revolves around helping people learn and connect.

Twice a week, people gather around the large table inside the shop for Stitch Socials. Some knit. Some crochet. Others spin wool or work on hand stitching projects while talking and sharing ideas.

“It’s a few hours of fellowship working on our crafts,” Kati explained.

The store also offers classes, demonstrations, summer camps, and an annual Fibre Retreat each September that brings together people who share an interest in the slower, more hands-on side of creativity.

And while yarn may be the heart of the shop, there are plenty of smaller details people discover once they walk inside.

Handspun wool “Fibre Pods.” Good quality tools. One of the largest button collections in town. Quiet corners filled with projects in progress.

It’s the kind of place where someone might walk in looking for yarn and leave having spent an hour talking to someone new.

Beyond the shop itself, The Match Factory also stays involved locally through support of the New Liskeard Fall Fair, Village Noël, BIA initiatives, and in-school demonstrations introducing younger generations to fibre arts and crafting.

In a world that moves pretty quickly, places like this feel a little different.

A little slower. A little more hands-on.

And maybe that’s part of why people keep coming back.

The dealership thanked everyone who participated, saying they loved seeing the community come together for the fun local challenge and hinted that more scavenger hunts and giveaways may already be in the works.
