CBC National Highlights Cobalt Refinery Project

Pic Credit: Electra Battery Materials Corporation
CBC National recently visited Electra Battery Metals' cobalt refinery, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the $100 million facility and explaining why governments in Canada and the United States see the project as strategically important.
There's a certain irony to the story. Although the refinery is being built near the Town of Cobalt, the raw cobalt it will initially process won't come from local mines. Instead, it will be imported from ethically sourced operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo before being refined into battery-grade cobalt sulfate, a key ingredient used in lithium-ion batteries found in electric vehicles, smartphones, defence technologies, and other advanced products.
Once operational, the refinery is expected to become the first cobalt refinery in North America, producing about 4% of the world's cobalt sulfate supply. The project has already received millions of dollars in funding from the Canadian and Ontario governments, as well as the U.S. Department of Defense, reflecting the growing importance of building a domestic refining industry at a time when China currently dominates global cobalt processing.
The CBC feature also explores why Electra has chosen to use proven refining technology rather than untested methods, with founder Trent Mell saying the company is focused on reducing risk as it works toward completing construction and beginning production by the end of 2027.
The full CBC National report offers an in-depth look at the refinery, the refining process, and why a project being built in our own backyard is drawing attention across North America.
